Reminder: May 14 event to showcase 5 incredible stories about identity, resilience, belonging

Support your fellow colleagues and hear their personal immigrant stories

Inspired by a recent Capital Storytelling event at Sacramento State last year, five members from the UC Davis Health community will each share their personal immigrant journey at the Cancer Center Auditorium on May 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This event is part of a yearlong celebration of 35 years of our UC Davis Principles of Community. The featured speakers will reflect on themes surrounding identity, resilience and belonging.

Registration is required. RSVP by Thursday, May 8.

About the storytellers

Laura Zamarripa Mendoza
Registered Nurse, Birthing Suites and Women’s Pavilion

Laura shares her powerful journey about migrating to the U.S. and learning English, becoming a first-generation college graduate, and now a registered nurse at Sacramento’s top hospital. Her story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the pursuit of purpose.

Sara Aghamohammadi
Chief Wellness Officer, UC Davis Health; Critical Care Medicine, Department of Pediatrics  

Sara will be sharing her story about growing up bicultural and how her experience on a simple shopping trip with her cousin in Iran became a rite of passage for her as an Iranian-American woman.

Leon “Kris” Tungohan
Project Policy Analyst and Business and Quality Coordinator, Pharmacy

Born in the Philippines and raised in the U.S., Kris’ story reflects how immigration, family sacrifice, and personal choices shaped his path both personally and professionally. It’s about honoring the past, navigating identity, and finding connection through shared experience.

Sandra Calderon
Nurse Practitioner, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center

Sandra will discuss her experience as a first-generation student and how a conversation with nursing faculty motivated her to pursue graduate education.

Stefan Toma
Clinical Liaison, IT

Stefan will share his journey as a Romanian emigrant – starting with a blend of excitement for the prospect of experiencing unique opportunities, learning different viewpoints and navigating the unknown. More than two decades later, he is living these values to their fullest.
