The Christian legacy: A son and father’s journey at UC Davis Health

Marcus Christian, executive director of patient support services, and his father, Louis Christian, environmental services worker, have devoted more than 40 years combined at UC Davis Health.
Colleagues often discover their connection by surprise, delighted to realize that the caring environmental services (EVS) worker is the father of a respected director.
Louis, who calls himself “the carer” of the family, is recognized for prioritizing others’ needs. Marcus, who looks out for his father, encourages Louis to prioritize his needs as well. Their bond extends beyond a typical father-son relationship; it’s a partnership grounded in respect, honesty, and trust.

When asked about their relationship, Louis said, “We share a close, quiet bond, often more like friends than just family.”
Marcus added, “Work sometimes keeps us apart, but we value what we have, given our tough past. We're easygoing, reserved, and typically avoid conflict – preferring to listen rather than speak.”
Path to UC Davis Health
Technically, Marcus’ first day at the health system began the day he was born – at UC Davis Medical Center.
His professional career at UC Davis Health, however, commenced in 2004, where he served as a part-time transporter responsible for safely transferring patients throughout the hospital. Today, he oversees the Patient Support Services department.
Despite his busy schedule, Marcus remains deeply connected to the Oak Park community he was raised in – actively involved in community-facing initiatives, such as organizing flu clinics, coat drives, and giveaway events.
Marcus said, “Growing up in the Oak Park area, I feel a deep connection and ongoing commitment to support and uplift the people around me.”
Louis, who has dedicated nearly two decades to UC Davis Health, began his career overseeing group homes and care facilities. Often drawn to those who need a helping hand, he has committed his life to serving others.
After several decades of hard work, he is looking forward to the next chapter in his life – retirement.
When asked what his life looks like after retirement, Louis said, “I'm feeling positive about the future. When I retire, I hope to maintain my health so I can keep playing basketball and spend time with my family across the States. I want to enjoy life while I’m still healthy.”
Louis plans to retire next summer – a key milestone both Louis and Marcus are looking forward to.
Marcus added, “My dad has worked his whole life. I’m truly excited for him and this next chapter of his life.”

Resilience and family pride
When asked about what he thinks of his son, Louis said, “I'm so proud of Marcus. I've been proud of him here since he was born. He's always been a good son. To be close by and see him grow, personally and professionally, has been a beautiful gift.”
Working side by side at UC Davis Health, Marcus and Louis have built a legacy of service and healing.
Their family story is not without hardship. Louis and Marcus have faced many tragic losses; however, their experiences have made them more empathetic and determined to help others.
Marcus shared, “We've faced a lot of tragedy, but it doesn't define us. Even with a tough upbringing, you can remain humble, respect others, and give people the benefit of the doubt.”
Behind every staff badge, there is a story. Marcus and Louis’ stories are one of commitment, love, and community.
