UC Davis Health collects more than 130 emancipation baskets over holidays

(SACRAMENTO)

For 19 years, UC Davis Health has helped brighten the season for local young adults transitioning to independent living through the Sacramento County Independent Living Program (ILP).

Together, staff have donated more than 2,400 emancipation baskets, each filled with living essentials for the young adults’ new homes.

This year, employees across 81 units and departments collected 136 baskets and 48 individuals made additional monetary contributions!

One emancipation basket typically includes a pillow, blankets, towels, plates, bowls, kitchen utensils and tools, cooking sets, glassware, bathroom supplies, grocery cards and a card with words of encouragement.

“Thank you so much for the emancipation basket,” a past recipient said. “It benefited me a lot when I first moved in to my apartment. There were many things in there I wasn’t planning on purchasing due to my budget so it helped me a lot.”

Sacramento County picked up all baskets in time to deliver them to the transitioning recipients for the holidays.

An emancipation basket committee spearheaded the effort. Members included Christine Williams, Amy Doroy, Lisa De Bartolo, Brenda Bowden, Francisco Maxey, Heather Stokes, Jane Pena, LaTreasa Sanders, Lisa De Bartolo, Lucia Lemus, Maile Smith, Michelle Cyrus, Paul Fankhanel and Shannon Romero.

Thank you to everyone who donated a basket or cash.
