UC Davis Health reaches goal of 20% in local hiring

(SACRAMENTO)

Insights gathered from surveys such as the CommUNITY Feedback Survey and I-DARE Survey have directly influenced meaningful changes at UC Davis Health, including advancements in talent acquisition practices.

One notable improvement is the enhancement of the Hiring for Success course for new hiring managers. This course, part of the UC Systemwide People Management Series, now includes a stronger emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Designed to guide hiring managers and supervisors in recruiting staff with fairness and intention, the training focuses on reducing bias, promoting inclusivity and ensuring a positive candidate experience.

Key outcomes of Hiring for Success training

These efforts, alongside community partnership building and expanded neighborhood outreach through the “You Belong Here” job series and “career chats”  have delivered measurable results. In fiscal year 2024, UC Davis Health achieved a 20% local hiring rate, an increase from 18.5% in fiscal year 2023.

This progress aligns with the organization's Anchor Institution Mission (AIM) for Community Health, wherein UC Davis Health has committed to strategically leveraging its economic and human resources to advance the economic vitality of our surrounding under-resourced communities. Local hiring is one of AIM’s four key strategies, including local purchasing, local investment and local volunteerism.

Several additional initiatives have supported the achievement of the 20% local hiring goal, including significant contributions from the Office for Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as featured in the news recognizing us as a Greatest Workplace for Diversity.

Why this matters
Research shows that social determinants of health (SODH)—such as access to quality education, fair-paying jobs and safe living environments—account for 40% of health outcomes.

“By prioritizing local hiring, UC Davis Health is addressing SODH determinants, helping to reduce systemic barriers and improving overall community well-being.”
