UC Davis Health has earned bronze recognition in 2026 from the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine organization.

UC Davis Health is among 92 health organizations nationwide recognized for using proven strategies to reduce physician burnout and support professional fulfillment in patient care. Organizations that meet the rigorous criteria of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program are leaders in transforming healthcare work systems and addressing the root causes of burnout among care teams.

Since its inception in 2019, the AMA Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program has recognized more than 250 organizations across the country. Recognition levels are valid for two years.

Sara Aghamohammadi, chief wellness officer and clinical professor at UC Davis Health, welcomed the recognition.

Aghamohammadi said, “I’m delighted UC Davis Health’s efforts to foster a supportive environment and reduce stigma around mental health support have been nationally recognized. Programs like Support U, Physician Camaraderie, S.M.A.R.T., and the Community Physicians Group’s onboarding and mentorship efforts have helped validate medical staff challenges while also providing meaningful support when needed.”

This achievement is only the beginning.

“While this accomplishment highlights the amazing work we are currently doing, it also guides our expansion,” Aghamohammadi added. “We must maintain a growth mindset, cultivate a culture of wellness, and continue to evolve and meet the challenges our clinicians face with empathy and respect. The Clinician Health and Wellbeing team is already identifying ways to strengthen our efforts and pursue silver distinction, with gold as our future goal.”

Burnout rates continue to decline, yet U.S. physicians remain at higher risk for burnout relative to other U.S. workers. Systemic drivers like administrative burden, staffing shortages and stigma around mental health continue to afflict the physician experience and contribute to the day-to-day stressors physicians face today. Continued efforts are essential to ensure doctors receive the support they need to thrive and achieve national health goals.
