UC Davis Orthopaedic Sports Medicine strengthens shoulder expertise with returning faculty, Christopher Bayne

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC Davis Health is welcoming Associate Professor Christopher Bayne back to its orthopaedic sports medicine team following the completion of advanced fellowship training in Nice, France. His return expands access to advanced shoulder care, including procedures not widely offered at hospitals in the country, further elevating the department’s capabilities in complex shoulder care.

Bayne completed his fellowship at the Institut de Chirurgie Réparatrice Locomoteur et du Sport (ICR), an internationally recognized center for shoulder surgery. During his training, he worked under world-renowned shoulder surgeon Pascal Boileau, gaining experience in advanced surgical techniques for complex shoulder conditions.

“Having faculty pursue advanced international training and then bring that expertise back to UC Davis Health benefits our entire program and, most importantly, our patients,” said R. Lor Randall, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. “Christopher’s return reflects the strength of our academic mission, where individual growth contributes to collective excellence.”

Advancing comprehensive shoulder care

UC Davis Sports Medicine delivers subspecialized orthopaedic care through a highly integrated, team-based model spanning multiple sites, including Folsom, Davis, Rocklin, and Roseville. Bayne’s expertise enhances the depth of the department’s comprehensive shoulder program and supports continued innovation in patient care.

His fellowship training included experience in several advanced shoulder procedures, including:

• Arthroscopic Latarjet procedure
  A minimally invasive approach to treating severe or recurrent shoulder instability, particularly in high-demand athletes. Training emphasized contemporary fixation techniques designed to reduce implant burden and support recovery.
• Pyrocarbon hemiarthroplasty
  A bone-preserving partial shoulder replacement option for younger, active patients in select clinical scenarios.
• Advanced shoulder reconstruction with tendon transfer
  Techniques that combine arthroplasty and tendon transfer to address complex conditions, including massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears.

“My goal is to bring the most advanced, evidence-based shoulder techniques to our patients while continuing to refine how we treat complex conditions in active individuals,” said Bayne. “Training in an internationally recognized center at the forefront of advanced shoulder surgery provided exposure to procedures that remain limited in availability in the United States, and I’m excited to integrate those techniques into our program at UC Davis.”

In addition, Bayne gained experience in arthroscopic management of complex fractures, recurrent instability, and advanced reconstructive shoulder conditions.
