Joseph M. Galante, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., is the Hospital Chief Medical Officer for UC Davis Health. He oversees Hospital Clinical Care Services, leading and directing the professional portion of the medical center’s clinical delivery system. He serves as the liaison between the hospital, the School of Medicine, and the self-governed medical staff of UC Davis Medical Center and represents the hospital on UC Health’s system-wide panel of chief medical officers addressing quality and operational improvements.
Galante’s responsibilities include medical oversight of all hospital and campus processes in collaboration with the School of Medicine, patient care services, and operational leadership. He also oversees licensure and accreditation processes, matters pertaining to clinicians (medical affairs), trauma programs, and support of GME functions. He is a keystone in the collaborative leadership of the operating rooms, recovery spaces, ICUs, the emergency department, and the upcoming 48X Complex Outpatient Surgery Center.
After receiving an undergraduate degree from Trenton State College, Galante earned his doctor of medicine degree at Temple University School of Medicine and completed his residency and fellowship training at UC Davis Health. He received his M.B.A. from Western Governors University, served in the United States Navy, including deploying to Afghanistan, and has received numerous military and academic honors.
Galante is board-certified in surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery and joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery in 2008. He is a professor of surgery and served as the Vice Chair of Education, General Surgery Residency Director, Trauma Division Chief, Medical Director of Perioperative Services, Trauma Medical Director, and Associate Chief Medical Officer before serving as the Interim Chief Medical Officer.
An accomplished physician-scientist, Galante has been an investigator for numerous clinical trials and has authored more than 250 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts on trauma and surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a board member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Secretary/Treasurer-elect of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association.
