Quantifying Distraction and Attention in Teens in Academic Settings

We are actively recruiting typically developing teens and teens with ADHD (ages 12–18 in school) to participate in the Q-DATA study. The goal of the Q-DATA study is to investigate distraction and its effects in real-world academic settings, increasing our understanding of how different individuals are affected by distractability.

Participation includes a two-week period where teen participants will answer short attention-related questions via a smartphone app 3 times per day. Teen participants, their parents, and their teachers will also complete brief questionnaires. Participants will be invited to complete additional sessions at the UC Davis MIND Institute in Sacramento or the Center for Mind and Brain in Davis, which will include:

  • Virtual Reality: Teens will complete academic tasks in a virtual classroom using an on-site VR headset.
  • Testing: Teens will complete brief academic and cognitive assessments.
  • Rating Scales & Questionnaires: Teens, parents, and teachers will answer questions about attention, behavior, and daily experiences.
  • Compensation: Teens can earn up to $75, while parents will receive a total of $25 for participation. Teachers will also be compensated $10 for completing study activities.
