Lydia Pleotis Howell (2009 - 2024)
Lydia Pleotis Howell, M.D., Distinguished Professor Emerita and Chair Emerita of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, is well-known as an advocate for women’s careers in biomedical science and for new protocols, practices, and technology that enhance the minimally invasive cytologic method of diagnosis. A past-president of both the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) and the Association for Academic Pathology (AAPath, formerly the Association of Pathology Chairs), Howell has served on many federal and state advisory committees on women’s health, conducted federally funded research on women’s careers in biomedical science, and founded leadership programs for UC Davis Health and AAPath. Honored for contributions to her profession, Howell is the recipient of the ASC’s Papanicolaou Award and AAPath’s Distinguished Service Award. She is AAPath’s founding Deputy Director and enjoys being a wife, mother, and grandmother.
