Residency Application Procedure

The Department of Urologic Surgery at UC Davis Health participates in the Electronic Residency Application System® (ERAS), the centralized online application service hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Applicants receive instructions and an electronic access key from their dean’s office. Please contact your institution for additional information.

Advice from the Program Director

Opportunities in urology have never been stronger, with continued high demand for residency graduates nationwide. The specialty is experiencing meaningful growth in diversity, including a rising number of women entering the field. This year, half of the matched applicants identify as female.

We are committed to building a residency program that reflects the rich diversity of California’s communities and fosters an inclusive, supportive training environment. Urology consistently reports one of the highest career satisfaction rates among surgical specialties, offering a rewarding balance of clinical impact, innovation and quality of life.

Securing a urology residency spot is challenging due to the highly competitive nature of the program. Some parameters to keep in mind include:

• There are limited positions nationally and about 15% of applicants fail to match
• There is an early match in urology, typically held in January
• We have many opportunities to rotate with our department as a visiting medical student, which is highly encouraged. Please contact our program administrative assistant for more information
• Program signaling is a highly effective strategy to show your interest in our program
• Research is highly desirable and most people invited for an interview are involved in research or have been involved in past publications
• Students should seek advice on residency from our faculty beginning in their second year (M2) of medical school
• We seek candidates who are deeply committed to their education and training, and who demonstrate personality traits that align well with the current team of residents and faculty
