Rotations and Schedule

A total of 11 urologic surgery residents rotate through the UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente hospitals and Sacramento Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center facilities.

As a PGY-1, residents rotate with general surgery at various hospitals and with urology. During the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years, residents rotate through UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente hospitals and the Sacramento VA Medical Center. During PGY-4 year, residents receive time to pursue their research interests. In the PGY-5 year, residents act as chiefs and are responsible for organizing conferences and supervising junior residents and medical students.

At any given time, seven residents are based at UC Davis Health. Residents rotate through dedicated services including urologic oncology, neurourology and reconstruction, endourology, pediatric urology, sexual medicine and infertility, as well as serving in a consult role to provide comprehensive patient care.

Resident Schedule

  • PGY-1: General Surgery at UC Davis Health and affiliated hospitals, with four to six months spent on urology.
  • PGY-2 and PGY-3: Urology at UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente hospitals, Sacramento VA Medical Center and Shriners Children's Northern California.
  • PGY-4: A total of four months for dedicated research, including two months blended clinical and research and rotations at UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente hospitals and Sacramento VA Medical Center.
  • PGY-5: Urology at UC Davis Health, Kaiser Permanente hospitals and Sacramento VA Medical Center.

Vacations

Urologic Surgery residents receive 32 days of paid leave annually, which includes both vacation and educational leave. It is our department’s policy that residents take four separate one-week vacations once every three months. The remaining four days are designated for educational leave to attend conferences of the resident’s choice.

The Department of Urologic Surgery strongly supports research and academic development, including participation in scientific meetings. Senior residents may attend up to two scientific conferences per year to present research, expand their knowledge and engage with leaders in the field.
