This class provides essential training for nurses new to the newborn nursery, focusing on routine care, assessment, and emergency readiness for healthy and at-risk newborns. Topics include recognizing normal infant behaviors and feeding cues, understanding Baby Friendly Initiatives, and accessing key nursery resources and policies.
Participants will learn to complete and document newborn screenings—including metabolic, hearing, and CCHD screens—as well as manage parent refusals. The course also covers neonatal thermoregulation, hypoglycemia protocols, and hyperbilirubinemia evaluation using TcB measurements. Nurses will gain confidence in the newborn admission and discharge process, comfort care protocols, and the Eat, Sleep, Console (ESC) method for assessing at-risk infants. A Code Pink drill and debrief round out the class, ensuring readiness for neonatal emergencies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
