Care of the Postpartum Patient

Mother holding her newborn baby in a hospital bed.

Designed for acute care float pool nurses and newly hired D3/T3 staff, this course focuses on recognizing and managing critical postpartum complications, including postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), preeclampsia, and obstetrical sepsis. Participants will explore the underlying pathophysiology, early warning signs, and rapid interventions necessary to stabilize patients during obstetric emergencies. Emphasis is placed on accurate quantification of blood loss (QBL), understanding the 4 R’s of PPH response, and using OB-specific criteria for identifying sepsis.

The course also covers the importance of team communication, role clarity, and structured debriefing following emergencies to improve patient safety and care coordination. This training equips nurses with the essential knowledge and confidence to safely care for postpartum patients in high-acuity situations.
