Sedation (Moderate): Blended Skills Validation

Nurse assessing patient

This hands-on simulated experience is intended for providers who must be sedation certified. The curriculum focuses on training supervised sedation professionals (SSPs) who work in critical care, procedural settings, and clinical areas that perform procedural sedation.

The in-person skills validation session consists of simulated case studies through use of a Human Patient Simulator (HPS). The focus is on the nurse’s role in providing safe, high-quality care for adult and/or pediatric patients at all phases along the sedation continuum. Effective team behaviors and communication skills will be incorporated throughout the curriculum, and participants will have an opportunity to practice management of a sedated patient during the simulation portion of the course. This course emulates the nurse’s workflow, stressing the importance of appropriate assessment, monitoring, early identification of complications and timely interventions, when caring for patients undergoing sedation. Participants who complete this course will receive validation of the sedation skills checklist.

This is a blended learning course that consists of two parts. Part 1 consists of two self-paced online modules that will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete. Part 2 consists of an in-person skills validation that is 2.5 hours in length. The total time commitment for this course is 5 hours.

This course is exclusively for UC Davis Health RNs located in critical care and procedural areas. Other UC Davis employees can request approval from the course coordinators if it aligns with their job responsibilities.

Participants must have current ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications according to unit requirements. This must be reflected in your UC Learning Center training transcript.

Part 1: Online Modules and Prework

Before attending the in-person skills validation, participants must complete two online modules and review documentation. The modules are to be completed no more than 30 days prior to class.
