Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral IV Insertion (Pediatric)

Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral IV Insertion

This blended learning course combines didactic instruction with hands-on practice to prepare nurses for ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (USGPIV) insertion certification. The curriculum covers ultrasound principles, vein identification, sterile technique, and troubleshooting for difficult IV access in the pediatric population. The curriculum will also cover the principles of the UC Davis Comfort Commitment and review lidocaine administration techniques. During the in-person session, participants will apply these skills through supervised practice.

Upon successful completion of all components, participants will be certified to perform USGPIV insertions in their designated clinical area, enhancing timely vascular access and improving patient care outcomes.

This is a blended learning course that consists of two parts. Part 1 consists of two online modules and policy review that will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. Part 2 is the in-person class that is 2.5 hours. The total time commitment for this course is 3.5 hours.

This class is only open to UC Davis Health employees. To ensure focused training and alignment with clinical needs, enrollment is limited to pediatric nurses from designated care areas including: Pediatrics, PICU/PCICU, NICU, Children's Hospital Critical Care Transport, Patient Care Resources, Pediatric Infusion, and the Emergency Department.

Part 1: Online Module, Policy Review and Checklist Review

Before attending the in-person class, participants must complete two self-paced online modules and review the policies. The modules are to be completed no more than 30 days prior to class. The modules will be assigned to your UC Learning Center account within 24 hours after successful registration.
