Ambulatory Quality Awards recognize the best in primary care
You can hear the ceremony before you can see it. The music pulses from the ground floor of the M.I.N.D. Institute (after clinic hours, of course).
The Ambulatory Quality Awards are back for another year. But this time the beats are courtesy of Dr. Chris Shin, physical medicine physician by day, DJ Ridiculous by night.
The awards ceremony recognizes the hard work and improvements of our primary care clinics and employees. Each year, the teams work toward goals across a variety of disciplines, such as HPV immunizations, blood pressure screenings and depression follow-ups.
“At the end of the day, patients are the real winders,” said Allen Hall, medical director of the Community Physicians Group. “We get to inspire our staff with a little friendly competition, but at the same time it raises everyone’s performance and inspires clinics to do their best work.”
Top clinic
The winningest clinic was Rocklin, with four first prize trophies in Advanced Care Planning, Blood Pressure Control, A1C Control and Breast Cancer Screening.
Congratulations, Rocklin!
Clinical Teaching Awards
The ceremony also recognized outstanding teaching contributions by the clinics and practicing physicians. Their efforts demonstrate a commitment to training future care providers, core to the mission of UC Davis Health.
- UC Davis Health School of Medicine Outstanding Preceptor Award: Peter O’Malley, Folsom clinic
- UC Davis Health Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing Outstanding Preceptor Award: Afshine Ghaemi, Roseville clinic
- UC Davis Health Schools of Medicine Outstanding Teaching Site: Davis campus clinic
- UC Davis Health Schools of Health Outstanding Practice Manager: Chris Jackson, Davis clinic
The amazing group of physicians here go above and beyond to provide mentorship and inspiration for students, helping to shape their future professional identities."
"Partnering with our community clinics has been invaluable in providing our first- and second-year medical students with the opportunity to connect classroom learning with patient care, and preparing them to succeed in their third-year clerkships,” said Shi.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Each year, the Ambulatory Quality Awards bestows a Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s recipient is recently retired Executive Director of Ambulatory Operations BJ Lagunday.
In his speech, Dr. Hall remembered one of the first things someone told him about Lagunday: “If you want anything done correctly, go to BJ.”
Brandon Harris, director of Ambulatory Operations, viewed Lagunday as a mentor, a friend and even a second mom. He recalled the words that guided Lagunday every day at work: “Do the work, do it with joy, and see the person behind the work. Put the patient first,” she said.
Do the work, do it with joy, and see the person behind the work. Put the patient first."
As she accepted the award, Lagunday explained that it was the “love of our patients and the people we serve” that inspired her every day. “This is a journey we do together,” she said. “Everyone has a strength they bring to work. My greatest joy has been to recognize and see people’s strengths.”
Congratulations to Lagunday and to all of UC Davis Health’s ambulatory clinics and leaders!
