Tuesday, March 19, is Certified Nurses Day, an opportunity to celebrate our nurses who have earned certifications in their specialty areas. Certified Nurses Day is an annual event recognizing and honoring the nurses who have gained knowledge and expertise in a specialty area through certification. It is celebrated each year on March 19 as a recognition of the birthday of the late Margretta “Greta” Madden Styles, an international pioneer of nursing certification.
Specialty certifications recognize enhanced nursing knowledge, skills, experiences, and competencies in specialty areas based on pre-determined standards set forth by the professional organization granting the recognition. Certification requires validation through additional educational coursework, relevant experience, and formal testing.
Davis 6
UC Davis Health celebrates its certified nurses by showcasing them on posters throughout the health system, sending individual thank you emails recognizing their contributions, and posting digital signage throughout the health system.
University Birthing Suites
In addition, David Lubarsky, M.D., and chief executive officer and vice chancellor of human health sciences, Christine Williams, chief nursing executive, and Mike Condrin, interim chief administrator of the UC Davis Medical Center, visited units throughout the organization to personally thank nurses who have obtained their specialty certification.

The units visited by the leaders included the Burn Unit, where UC Davis Health nurses collaborated with burn nurses across the country to establish burn nursing as a specialty by the American Nurses Association in October 2023. The leaders and the Certified Nurses Day committee also visited Davis 3 – the University Birthing Suites, Davis 6 - Cardiothoracic Progressive Care Unit, and the Lawerence J. Ellison Ambulatory Care Center, where they spoke with the nurses, honored their certifications, and recognized the exceptional care they provide our patients.
