Honoring Our Veterans: Mixer and Community Space
On November 14, 2024, the UC Davis Health Veterans Employee Association, an Employee Resource Group (ERG) supported by the Office for Health Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion’s ERG Program, hosted a meaningful Veterans Day Mixer at the Education Building’s 2nd-floor breezeway. The event brought together dozens of attendees from across the organization to honor and celebrate the service and sacrifices of veterans within the UC Davis Health community.
The gathering provided a welcoming space for veterans, active-duty members, reservists, and their families to connect and share their experiences. Attendees enjoyed food, coffee, and the camaraderie of colleagues and supporters from all areas of the workforce.
“This event was a wonderful opportunity to honor the contributions of veterans and build community between those who have served and those who support them,” shared Miles Thorne, Chair of the ERG. The mixer highlighted the importance of fostering inclusivity and appreciation for the diverse backgrounds of UC Davis Health employees.
Greg Stanford, a veteran and Vice Chair of the UC Davis Health Veterans Employee Association, shared his thoughts on the importance of celebrating veterans: “Veterans possess resilience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to service—qualities that are essential in healthcare and beyond.” Tammy Kenber, Chief Human Resources Officer, later echoed this sentiment in her Veterans Day message, stating, “Veterans bring unique skills, perspectives, and leadership qualities that enrich our workforce and strengthen our mission.” Their reflections underscore the profound impact of veterans on the organization and the importance of creating spaces like the Veterans Day Mixer to celebrate and honor their service.
The Veterans Day Mixer exemplified UC Davis Health’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and supporting its veteran workforce. The event reinforced a shared respect for those who have served our country and continue to enrich the UC Davis Health family by bringing the community together.
