Leadership message: A medical student’s story of resilience and the importance of mentorship, community
Dear Colleagues,
My name is Christi Candido and I’m a first-year medical student at the UC Davis School of Medicine. Just last Friday, I finished my first final of medical school! Reflecting on the journey that got me here, I want to share my story so that it may serve as a reminder of the impact of mentorship and how there’s a transformative potential within us all. I am a proud product of what can be achieved through determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of a community.
As with any first-generation student, my path was not paved with ease. From my humble beginnings in the Philippines to the challenges of navigating a new life in California, I encountered hurdles that most low-income immigrants will be able to relate to. I went to Title 1 schools, received free/reduced lunch vouchers, and waited at community clinics for health care. For housing, I grew up in a residential care facility for the elderly since my family were caregivers. At no point did I feel "disadvantaged," because I was surrounded by many others who faced the same struggles. This was the norm for most Central Valley immigrant communities. It wasn't until high school that I realized our reality could change and that I could be an agent of change by achieving higher education.
Lacking mentorship or a clear career path to medicine, I grappled with finding support and felt isolated when I started college. Those days were filled with self-doubt, questioning whether I was truly capable of pursuing a career in medicine. Fortunately, I met individuals who later became part of the village that made me who I am today. With the endless encouragement of my mentors and community, I found the strength to overcome barriers that once seemed insurmountable. After college, I embarked on a path of personal growth, completing a post-baccalaureate program that allowed me to reshape my academic trajectory. Through hard work, dedication, and the support of my village, I transformed myself into a candidate for medical school, ultimately earning my place at the UC Davis School of Medicine. In my journey, we find the lessons of reinvention and the power of mentorship.
Being here at UC Davis is more than just a personal success; it’s an achievement for the community I represent. This is why I dedicated myself to mentoring those who have faced similar adversities and to extend a helping hand to uplift others. As leaders, we understand the profound impact that guidance and encouragement can wield on one’s journey.
As we navigate our own personal or professional growth journeys, let us remember the value of the importance of mentorship in shaping potential, and the impact we all have in guiding others toward their aspirations.
Just as my village rallied around me, let us create an environment where every individual is empowered to lean into their vulnerabilities, to embrace their dreams and to reach their full potential. Together, we can cultivate a new culture of growth, support, and empowerment that echoes the spirit of resilience. By doing so, we not only elevate ourselves but also the communities around us, fostering a community of leaders who is someone for others.
With unwavering determination,

Christi Candido
