Leadership Message: Orthopaedic and neurospine care at 48X

(SACRAMENTO)

Dear Colleagues,

Our campus has reached a historic milestone, and I’m thrilled about the new access to leading-edge orthopaedic and neurospine care at the 48X Complex Outpatient Surgery Center. With 14 operating rooms, 48X is one of the largest freestanding outpatient surgery centers in the U.S., significantly boosting capacity for outpatient spine surgeries in inland Northern California.

UC Davis Health is at the forefront of spine care in using technologies like augmented reality (AR) and robotics to enhance surgical precision. Our commitment to virtual reality and evidence-based medicine is opening new avenues for patient education and treatment. For example, we are piloting an AR-based technique to educate patients about their spine conditions, aiming to reduce anxiety and improve outcomes.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation, offering advanced techniques like endoscopic, minimally invasive, robotic-assisted, augmented reality-guided spine surgery, and motion-preserving solutions. Some of our services include:

  • Anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF)
  • Cervical total disc replacement (cTDR), including nonfusion and motion-sparing approaches
  • Endoscopic spine procedures, including nonfusion and motion-sparing approaches
  • Laminectomy, microdiscectomy, microdecompression (minimally invasive)
  • Minimally invasive lumbar fusion, including microsurgery, TLIF, ALIF, XLIF
  • Sacroiliac joint (SI joint) fusion, including microsurgery

Our faculty physicians are also playing a key role in shaping the future of spine care. By participating in clinical trials and developing new diagnostic tools and treatments, we're bringing the latest advancements directly to our patients. We work closely with neurosurgical spine specialists at the Spine Center and partner with teams like the UC Davis Anesthesia Pain group to create groundbreaking protocols for optimal outcomes.

Our projects utilize federated learning and AI-driven approaches to securely gather data and generate innovative clinical insights, all while maintaining HIPAA compliance. We're at the forefront of this approach, having secured a multicenter grant from the esteemed Scoliosis Research Society to explore how federated learning can enhance patient outcomes and surgical algorithms.

It is truly an exciting time. As Vice Chair of Surgical Innovation and newly appointed Peter and Sophie Pappas Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery, it is my absolute privilege to be a part of navigating outpatient orthopaedic spine care at our institution. The fundamental blocks of our success build on partnerships between our faculty across Service Lines while embracing a fiscally responsible approach to new technology. Stay tuned as we enter an exciting new era at UC Davis Health

Sincerely,
