Mentorship vs. Sponsorship: The Need to Expand Legacy-Building in Academic Health

(SACRAMENTO)

This event is designed for faculty members at a stage where they can serve as sponsors but may need guidance on effectively taking on this role.

You and colleagues in your departments are invited to attend this in-person, engaging panel discussion to raise awareness about the importance of sponsorship in academic health and how we can foster its growth among UC Davis faculty.

We also encourage junior faculty and trainees to attend to learn how sponsorship can significantly accelerate career growth.

Title: Mentorship vs. Sponsorship: The Need to Expand Legacy-Building in Academic Health

  • Date: October 25, 2024
  • Time: Light breakfast at 8:30 a.m.; panel discussion from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • Location: UC Davis Health Education Building, Room 2222, Sacramento

Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Charles Nemeroff
We are honored to have Dr. Charles Nemeroff, Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Texas, Austin, join the panel as a special guest. Dr. Nemeroff, visiting as part of Dr. Lubarsky’s UC Davis Vice Chancellor Visiting Scholar program, has successfully sponsored faculty across the U.S. in psychiatry and will share his invaluable insights.

What is Sponsorship?
While mentorship provides guidance and support, sponsorship takes a more proactive approach. Sponsors are typically well-established individuals who advise and actively advocate for their mentees. They leverage their influence and networks to open doors that might otherwise remain closed.
