PURPOSE
To describe the roles, authority, and responsibilities of the Dean of the School of Medicine.

POLICY

  1. The Dean of the School of Medicine reviews the performance of and administratively oversees Chairs of Departments and Center Directors; the Dean has control over resources pertaining to medical education (such as OME), which provide opportunities for the Dean to exercise their authority over the academic enterprise, as the Chief Academic Officer.
  2. The Dean shall be the executive officer of the faculty and the liaison officer between the faculty and UC Davis Health administration.
  3. The Dean of the School of Medicine (or their delegate) is an ex-officio member of the Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) and serves on the Committee without a vote.
  4. The Dean has the authority to receive, and adjudicate on, appeals from students who have been dismissed by the FEC. Grounds for reinstating students who have been dismissed are limited and outlined in the SOM Bylaws and Regulations.
  5. The Dean is responsible for working with the Committee on Educational Policy to ensure compliance with external licensing and accrediting bodies.

PROCEDURE

  1. The Dean participates during meetings of the FEC of the SOM and has the opportunity to share their expertise and perspective on all matters being discussed, and to provide updates to the FEC on relevant matters pertaining to the functioning of the SOM.
  2. The Dean participates during the General Faculty Meetings of the SOM and has a standing invitation to provide updates to the Faculty of the SOM on matters relevant to the SOM.
  3. The Dean shall be informed of all decisions voted on and approved by the FEC and the Faculty of the SOM, and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the SOM.
  4. The Dean has Vice Deans and Associate Deans who report to the Dean, and many serve as ex-officio members of faculty education committees such as CEP, CSP, Admissions and CEP Subcommittees as specified in the faculty bylaws, further enabling the Dean to provide oversight of medical education.
