What You’ll Find in CHS

CHS students are passionate about serving their communities, and our programs are designed to help you grow as a physician, leader and changemaker.

  • A Supportive Learning Environment

As a community health scholar, you’ll join a learning environment that offers:

    • A cohort of peers with similar backgrounds and lived experiences, with more than 50 percent of students identifying as first-generation college graduates.
    • Dedicated faculty, academic coaches, staff, preceptors, and mentors who are committed to your success throughout medical school.
    • A community-centered curriculum grounded in cultural humility, health equity and care for underserved populations.
    • A safe environment to engage in difficult and inspiring conversations about health inequities and potential solutions.
    • Clinical training opportunities in communities that you want to serve, so you can learn from preceptors who are doing the hard work of caring for vulnerable populations every day.
  • Our Five CHS Programs

Our Community Health Scholars programs are four-year medical degree pathways designed to train physicians who will practice in underserved communities in California. Three of the programs are also designated University of California Programs in Medical Education (PRIME) pathways.

Our five pathways each focus on the following different communities:

    1. PRIME Central Coast
      Focuses on central coastal communities
    2. Rural PRIME
Focuses on rural and frontier regions
    3. REACH
Stands for “Reimagining Education to Advance Central California Health”
      Focuses on Central Valley communities
    4. TEACH-MS
Stands for “Transforming Education and Community Health for Medical Students”
      Focuses on urban underserved communities
    5. Tribal Health PRIME
Focuses on Native American and indigenous communities

All CHS programs share a common curriculum while offering unique experiences tailored to the health priorities and community partnerships of each region.
