UC Davis nanomedicine scientist recognized as a top biomedical engineer in the U.S.
Yuanpei Li has been elected to the prestigious American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows
Biochemist and molecular medicine professor Yuanpei Li has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) 2022 College of Fellows. The College of Fellows is comprised of the top 2% of medical and biological engineers in the country. They are regularly recognized for their contributions in teaching, research, and innovation.
Li was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for outstanding contributions to the development of intelligent nanomedicine platforms to improve drug delivery.
“I’m very pleased to be named to the AIMBE College of Fellows,” said Li. “This esteemed group of professionals are tremendously accomplished in their fields, and it is an honor to be included in their midst.”
Li’s research focuses on developing next-generation nanomedicine platforms and novel therapeutics by learning from nature and clinical practice. Li and his team then apply their findings to fighting diseases such as cancer.
One innovation being developed by Li’s lab is a double-contrast technique that offers a significant advance in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to pick out very small tumors from normal tissue. Another is an interdisciplinary drug design strategy integrating the conventional fields of medicinal chemistry and nanomedicine.
Li and his lab also investigate nano drug delivery and targeting technologies related to stem cells (cells that can turn into different types of cells), exosomes (a type of vesicle used for signaling between cells), and oncosomes (micro vesicles secreted by cancer cells).
The most accomplished and distinguished engineering and medical school chairs, research directors, professors, innovators, and successful entrepreneurs comprise the College of Fellows. AIMBE Fellows are regularly recognized for their contributions in teaching, research, and innovation.
A formal induction ceremony will be held during AIMBE’s 2022 Annual Event on March 25. Li will be inducted along with 152 colleagues who make up the AIMBE Fellow Class of 2022.
