If you are having upcoming radiation to the head and neck structures your oncologist will likely recommend a dental evaluation.

At your appointment, the dentist will examine the whole mouth checking for any loose or infected teeth. The health of the supporting gum tissues are closely evaluated. Radiographs are commonly used as a part of this evaluation. Any recommended treatment will be discussed with your oncologist so that he or she is aware.

Your dentist will also discuss the importance of oral hygiene as radiation is known to greatly increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
