This course equips nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary for safe and effective obstetrical emergency department. Topics include the purpose and structure of OB triage, proper application of the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), and an overview of EMTALA and Medical Screening Exam (MSE) requirements.
Nurses will learn to identify patients appropriate for Labor & Delivery evaluation versus the Emergency Department, and gain practical skills in conducting standardized triage procedures. Training includes performing sterile speculum exams, using OB ED documentation tools and smart phrases in the EMR, and appropriately charting telephone advice. The course also covers setup and supplies for common triage procedures and adding Healthwise patient education materials to discharge summaries. This training ensures consistent, legally compliant, and patient-centered care in the OB ED setting.
