Day 1 of POEP offers a comprehensive foundation in essential perinatal care practices for new and transitioning obstetric staff. Topics include effective communication using TeamSTEPPS, SBAR, and closed-loop techniques to enhance patient safety and team collaboration. Participants will review fetal heart monitoring using NICHD language, identify critical decelerations, and apply oxytocin and labor induction/augmentation protocols.
The day continues with an introduction to case study presentation, a focused review of operating room workflows including Code C protocols, surgical prep, and blood loss quantification, and concludes with a hands-on skills station covering Leopold’s maneuvers, fetal scalp electrode (FSE) and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) use, and tools for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) management. Through lectures, interactive games, video demonstrations, and Q&A sessions, this day builds confidence and clinical readiness in perinatal care.
