In Remembrance: Honoring our Golden Aggies

(SACRAMENTO)

The UC Davis community gathered in solemn reflection for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony last week, held at the heart of the Davis campus. The event honored the 136 Golden Aggies—students and alumni who sacrificed in service to our country.

The ceremony opened with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, performed by Dr. Ebony E. Lewis, EdD, Chief Strategy Officer for the UC Davis Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Her performance set a reverent tone for the morning.

Chancellor Gary S. May welcomed attendees with heartfelt remarks, followed by Gregory Stanford, MBA, and Jordan Samson, representing the Veterans Employee Association Employee Resource Group from the Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, who presented the ceremonial wreath.

Roberto Herrera, Deputy Secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, read the Governor’s proclamation, reaffirming the state’s commitment to honoring its fallen heroes. Dr. Arthur Dublin, a veteran and faculty member in Radiology, delivered the keynote address and shared reflections on service, sacrifice, and remembrance.

ASUCD President Gaius Ilupeju served as the event’s moderator, guiding the program with poise and respect. A particularly moving moment came as students read aloud the names of each of the 136 Golden Aggies, ensuring their legacies live on in the hearts of the UC Davis community.

The Memorial Union, located at the center of the Davis campus, is a lasting tribute to these individuals. Its inscription reminds us of their enduring impact: "To the students who gave their lives to preserve our liberties and to aid millions around the world."

Members of the VEA ERG held a warm coffee and networking mixer on the UC Davis Health Sacramento Campus earlier this week. The event featured a touching Memorial Day display, bringing together Veterans and community members in honor and remembrance.
