In honor Physicians’ Week (March 25-31), we will highlight some of our outstanding physicians who help make UC Davis Health a world-class health system.

Physician Tiffani Johnson elected president of the Academic Pediatric Association,

Tiffani Johnson, M.D.

Tiffani Johnson, M.D. associate professor of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis Health, was recently named president-elect of the Academic Pediatric Association (APA).

“I seek to strengthen the APA’s engagement with and empowerment of communities to ensure organizational efforts center the needs of patients and families,” Johnson said. “I will also support the APA’s goal to develop diverse scholars and leaders to advance child health equity by investing in and developing members to improve systems, policies and practices that optimize child health outcomes and reduce inequities.”

Johnson currently serves as a national mentor for the APA Young Investigator Award and New Century Scholars programs. She also co-chairs the APA Race in Medicine Special Interest Group. This group seeks to bring awareness to the role of race in the practice of medicine and to provide resources by which members can support the healthy development and optimal care of youth.

Distinguished homegrown leader appointed Neurological Surgery Chair

Kia Shahlaie, M.D.

UC Davis Health professor and neurosurgeon Kia Shahlaie, M.D., an alumnus of the UC Davis School of Medicine, is the new Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, where he had been serving as interim chair since July 2022. He will also continue serving as co-director of the Center for Skull Base Surgery. A Sacramento native, Shahlaie has a longstanding connection with UC Davis, having completed his undergraduate, medical school and residency training all within the same institution. He completed fellowships at UCSF and the Pacific Neuroscience Institute before returning to UC Davis Health as a faculty member in July 2010.

Director of health care quality joins international health safety board.

Ulfat Shaikh, M.D.

For more than a decade, UC Davis Director of Health Care Quality Ulfat Shaikh, M.D. has been a member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). This month, she was appointed to the influential organization’s board of directors.

“Being a part of the ISQua network helped me thrive personally and professionally and enabled me to make an international impact on child health quality and safety,” said Shaikh, a UC Davis Children’s Hospital pediatrician who is also professor of pediatrics at the UC Davis School of Medicine. “I now want to give back to the ISQua community by serving on its board to enhance its educational initiatives, further strengthen its fellowship and advisory programs, and contribute to its mission of driving improvements in health and health care worldwide.”

John Morrison, M.D.

John Morrison, M.D. reflects on the new role, his career and the future of the field.

In November, UC Davis Health neurology professor John Morrison will begin his term as president-elect of the Society for Neuroscience. Morrison is the director of the California National Primate Research Center at UC Davis and a distinguished professor in the School of Medicine's Department of Neurology.

"It's a pretty big deal, I have to say," Morrison said. "And it's important for UC Davis to have faculty in roles like this. It's a very important role in the national and international community and shows there are international leaders at UC Davis." 

Candice Sauder named to Executive and Education Committees 

Candice Sauder, M.D.

Candice Sauder, M.D., assistant professor of surgery and specialist within the Division of Surgical Oncology, has been named by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) to its Executive and Education Committees.  Sauder will educate and improve efforts in using cancer staging standards and validate systems for classification and management of cancer.
