Philosophy of Care

I am honored to care for people and their families who are living with serious illness. Through personal experience with friends and family members, I appreciate the complex emotions and symptoms that a serious diagnosis brings. My goal is to treat people with the understanding and respect that I would want for my family members.

Clinical Interests

Annemarie Hargadon MD is board certified in internal medicine with subspecialty board certification in palliative medicine and hospice. She has over 30 years of experience in caring for people and their families living with serious illness. As a clinical staff physician at the UCDMC Comprehensive Cancer Center, she works in the Supportive Medicine Clinic, focusing on improving the quality of life for people living with cancer. Her academic focus is on teaching empathic and effective communication skills to medical students, residents and fellows. (Preferred pronouns: she/her)

Research/Academic Interests

My work and research experience allows me to focus on three things:

1. Building an interdisciplinary practice in outpatient palliative medicine.

2. Teaching an integrative approach to palliative care based on its essential domains: expert symptom management, facilitation and support around aligning patient goals of care with treatments, communication skills and attention to each patients’s psycho-social and spirtual needs.

3. Shaping a research agenda that further develops and disseminates these comprehensive principles and practices in palliative care education.
