Research/Academic Interests
Dr. Leung has expertise in molecular biology and immunology. He has extensive training in liver immunology and autoimmunity. Dr. Leung focused his research studying in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a prototypic autoimmune disease of the liver. He devoted extensive effort in understanding the molecular basis of immune tolerance, designing novel platforms in the diagnosis and preventive interventions of in PBC and other autoimmune diseases.
Dr. Leung also has keen interest in studying seafood allergy. His laboratory is well-known for the cloning and identification of shellfish allergens from crustaceans including shrimp, lobsters and crab as well as from mollusks (oysters, abalone, scallop and mussel). Dr. Leung’s research has translated into clinical applications such as cell-based diagnostic test for shrimp allergy and the development of shellfish allergen vaccines. Dr. Leung is also interested in studying microbiota and food allergy.
