The UC Davis School of Medicine is committed to student success while also ensuring everyone’s health and safety.  Our leadership and faculty continue to work to provide robust educational experiences in a remote environment.  This page contains information and resources for current students, prospective students and staff.

Vaccinations for High-Risk Exposure:
With the Moderna vaccine just approved for emergency use by the FDA, vaccinations continue for healthcare providers.  Employee Health is prioritizing vaccines for those with significant clinical responsibilities at this time, but plan to expand their efforts once the vaccine supply is better understood.  We hope to have more details about scheduling prior to your return from break. In the meantime, if you are interested in getting the vaccine, please complete the vaccine volunteer survey.

Symptomatic COVID-19 Testing:

  1. If you have symptoms, please complete the Daily Symptom Survey, which will provide instructions on how to get tested through Employee Health in Sacramento.  You will soon see a revised survey to account for possible symptoms related to receiving a COVID-19 vaccination.
  2. Please also reach out to Dr. Jain immediately if you are symptomatic and/or get a positive test result, as we don’t automatically know who tests positive. We can help with appropriate contact tracing, medical education accommodations, financial hardship, and other resources for students with symptoms.
  3. Please contact Lauren Snow if you have any financial hardship related to COVID.

Weekly Asymptomatic COVID-19 testing:
We are encouraging all students, even those not on clinical rotations, to get weekly asymptomatic screening, particularly before going away on winter break and upon returning. Asymptomatic testing is strongly recommended until a person receives a second dose of vaccine. So please take advantage of these collection locations.

Additional Moore Hall collection site dates in January will be announced as soon as possible.

Testing in Davis during Winter Break:
UC Davis Health employees and students are encouraged to continue to access the saliva-based asymptomatic testing that is available in Davis at the following locations:

  • ARC – Please note that during the winter break, the ARC is only open on the Davis campus December 19, 20, 26 (half day) and January 2 and 3.  UC Davis students and employees must log in to the Health-e-Messaging Portal to make an appointment at the ARC for asymptomatic COVID-19 testing. You will need to provide contact information and sign a consent form — see appointment instructions for more details.
  • Mondavi Center – Additional hours are available during the winter break in Davis at the Mondavi Center. Please note that the Mondavi Center is operated by the Healthy Davis Together program, which utilizes a different appointment scheduling system.  Please follow the appointment instructions. This program requires the following code to register: “davis.” An address is required, but does not need to be located in Davis.  The Mondavi Center is available for asymptomatic testing during the winter break except on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. Free 30-minute parking is adjacent to both the Mondavi Center and the ARC.  The estimated time to get the test is 10 minutes or less and results are typically available in 24-48 hours.

PPE:
If you have any question or concern related to PPE, please let us know via this google doc know when, where and how these problems have occurred so we can intervene to ensure you have the PPE you need to be safe.

COVID-19 Resources Page Update:
New this week is a slight redesign of the COVID-19 resources and information page, which now includes vaccine information, daily COVID-19 Dashboard and this is an FAQs document. This page is also the home for the comprehensive and regularly updated Management of Patients document with all of the COVID-19 protocols and practices.  The Insider always has the latest news articles.

  • An FAQ about vaccines has been placed in the Coronavirus Resource Center.  More information will be added as more is known and finalized.
  • UC Health shares rolled-up statistics (UCDH plus other UC campuses) each day for U of CA Health on Twitter.  These include percentage of ICU space used by COVID patients, 7-day rolling averages for all UC Health campuses, and other data.

Sacramento Area Stay At Home Order:
These are similar to restrictions earlier this year and will be in place for at least three weeks. As a reminder, travelling to or from work for UC Davis Health healthcare workers is considered essential travel and it is allowed – and this includes medical students!

Curriculum:

  • In keeping with the UC Davis main campus expectations for winter quarter, all lectures and “non-tactile” active learning components for the upcoming Mechanisms and Disease block will be conducted remotely, at least until spring break. This means that clinical skills content will be the primary form of in-person educational content during this period. Specific details of that content and its timing will continue to be shared with you by the course IORs. We are hoping that we can increase the number of in-person educational sessions beyond clinical skills content after spring break, which will depend on approval from UC Davis main campus administration, directives from the state and county, guidance from our own infectious disease experts, the extent of COVID-19 spread on campus and in the hospital, progress made in vaccinating our community, and faculty availability. We will share more information about what to expect in the second half of the Mechanisms and Disease block with you as soon as it is available.
  • We will continue to use NBME exams where feasible because we think they are a valuable means of preparation for USMLE Step 1. We will give you advance notification about all exams that necessitate in person attendance, with physical distancing and masking required.
  • Please continue to attend the monthly Curriculum Conversation Hour to provide faculty with feedback on your coursework, as that often results in “real time” changes. If you cannot attend, please share your perspectives in advance with your CEP representatives.

If you would like to share a message on social media encouraging people to stay at home, the California Hospital Association has a powerful video that can be shared on LinkedIn, Facebook, and/or Twitter.  The video asks people to help health care workers over the holidays by staying at home and not mixing with others.

Currently, UCDH has the staff, ample supplies and resources available to manage every patient’s many needs.  Since we deal with crowding every winter, the hospital is monitoring staffing and overnight bed use very carefully and also reviewing surgical procedures with our Look Ahead Committee, and assessing the situation hour-by-hour to ensure we can continue to serve all of the patients who need our services in the coming weeks.
