DAISY Award—Cigie Coronel
Cigie Coronel
Patient Care Resources
I’ve been in and out of hospital stays for more than 3 months. Cigie stands out to me as an exemplary nurse not just here at UC Davis Health but among all the nurses I’ve encountered in the 6 different hospitals I’ve been admitted to in these past 3 months. I’ve had many good nurses help me but a very small few I would consider great. Skill and ability are great and necessary which Cigie certainly has but where she stands out is her compassion, dedication, and teamwork with colleagues. My health situation is very complicated and requires support from many specialists throughout the day every day. She patiently listened and recognized the vulnerability I have and answered my questions with action and advocacy to my supporting doctors without fail. She recognized that I am very knowledgeable about my own condition and never treated me as though she or the physicians knew better than me what I needed. That kind of humility allowed me to trust that I am the biggest part of my care team. As if the above were not enough to warrant her recognition, Cigie also showed her respect and dedication to her coworkers throughout the day with willing and eager teamwork. Many times I witnessed her quickly and without prompting jump in and provide a helping hand to a colleague or a colleague’s patient in the same manner as if she was caring for her own family without sacrificing her own assigned duties. I had three roommates at the same time (none of whom were her charge) and I saw her assist each at least once. What I appreciate most about Cigie is she doesn’t perform the way she does for any recognition or awards; it is her calling, and she pursues it with passion. Her practice exemplifies all the qualities spelled out in the DAISY award criterion and when I saw the option to nominate her for a Daisy Award, I knew I must.
