We want to begin by saying that it is an honor to support trainee mental health. We recognize that residents and fellows face unique pressures in training. This clinic was developed to support you during the inevitable challenges of training. On this page we will briefly touch on the following:
Trainee Mental Health Clinic (TMHC) is committed to helping you access the care that best meets your needs. Our clinic provides psychiatry services during what may be a focused period of care. For most patients, when the time is right, we’ll help transition your care to a psychiatrist in the community or to your PCP. In some cases, we can provide ongoing care.
If you are in need of urgent support, or during periods of high demand for services, we may prioritize connecting you directly with a community provider who accepts your insurance, so you can receive the support you need as quickly as possible.
Our treatment philosophy emphasizes that medication management works best when integrated with other support systems, which can include counseling through ASAP or Headspace, academic coaching through the Office of Resident and Fellow Development, connecting with Inclusive Excellence, and accessing community resources and providers.
To help us get started and begin insurance verification, please complete our intake form and email to:
Once we receive your completed intake form, it typically takes 2 weeks to process. If you haven’t received confirmation that your intake forms have been processed, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Once completed, we will call to schedule your first appointment — typically within 4 weeks.
If you have any questions about TMHC services, please email us at one of the following:
Email is reserved for our initial communications. DO NOT use email for psychiatric care. DO NOT use email for urgent concerns. If you don’t have MyChart, please sign up before your first scheduled appointment.
We use Epic EMR and will ensure the “break-the-glass” feature on your chart is turned on.
Once you’ve established care within the clinic, ALL communication will be via MyChart messages OR via the clinic phone (916-734-3574).
Please note, the Trainee Mental Health Clinic does NOT offer same-day appointments and does NOT function as an urgent care or emergency psychiatry service. No, we do not conduct psychoeducational assessments. These are comprehensive evaluations conducted by educational psychologists to assess your cognitive functioning, attention, learning, and information processing. They can help clarify diagnoses such as ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences, while also providing documentation that supports academic accommodations for exams and training programs.
If you suspect that you have a diagnosis such as ADHD, we may recommend a psychoeducational assessment to provide diagnostic clarity and identify supports that may be beneficial for your academic success. Please reach out to us for a list of providers within the community who offer these assessments.
The willingness to seek support is an invaluable tool. You need your team behind you, which can include chosen family, friends, mentors, learning specialists, coaches, therapists, and psychiatrists. We are grateful for the opportunity to be a support on your team during this part of your journey.
Sincerely,
Karima Holmes, M.D.
Ravi Acharya, M.D.

Support is available anytime, 24/7/365, anywhere, for a variety of mental health challenges you may be struggling with—all from the privacy of your smartphone.
Discuss sensitive topics with a therapist in the privacy and comfort of your own home (or other private location), either through online video or by phone. Providers are highly trained professionals who can evaluate and treat general mental health conditions in patients ages 10 and older.
Medical coverage is administered through Anthem Blue Cross and includes coverage for important services such as preventive care, doctor’s office visits, hospitalization and prescription drugs.
GME also offers an interactive confidential screening program. Take a moment to complete the brief, online questionnaire to find out how stress may be affecting you. After completing the questionnaire, one of our counselors will send you recommendations for further evaluation or follow-up. Again, this service is completely anonymous and confidential.
