Welcome to the Sleep Medicine Program at UC Davis Health. The program features an AASM-accredited sleep neurodiagnostic facility and comprehensive outpatient and inpatient sleep clinical services. Our mission is to provide patient-centered care across the full spectrum of sleep disorders while advancing the University of California’s commitment to clinical care, education, and research.

The Sleep Medicine Program collaborates closely with multiple specialties involved in the comprehensive management of sleep disorders and works in close partnership with pediatric sleep specialists to ensure continuity of care for patients transitioning into adulthood. Key collaborations include otolaryngology for hypoglossal nerve stimulator implantation and upper airway surgery for obstructive sleep apnea; dental specialists providing mandibular advancement device therapy; and sleep-certified behavioral psychologists offering cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders. The program also supports PM&R physicians in the management of respiratory support for patients with neuromuscular conditions. To optimize care for patients with epilepsy, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases, and headache disorders, the program maintains close collaboration with the Department of Neurology.

In addition to clinical care, the program trains sleep medicine fellows and provides education to residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals interested in the role of sleep and its complex interactions with organ systems and human behavior. The Sleep Medicine Program is also actively engaged in sleep-related research, spanning translational, clinical, and big-data science.

The multispecialty specialty sleep clinic at UC Davis is located at UC Davis Carmichael location. It aims to provide care for patients with sleep disordered breathing (obstructive and central sleep apnea, sleep related hypoxemia and hypoventilation), insomnia, hypersomnia (narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia and other hypersomnia), restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder, and parasomnias. This care is provided by sleep physicians drawn from multiple disciplines including pulmonary medicine, neurology, internal medicine, ENT and other allied specialties. The emphasizes upon collaborative care with primary care providers and specialty referring providers to provide maximal benefit from management of sleep problems on overall health, sleep-related dysfunction and on chronic disease outcomes.

The sleep diagnostic laboratory is part of the Midtown UC Davis Neurodiagnostic Center with a AASM-accredited 8-bedded lab offering the full range of investigational procedures for sleep disorders including polysomnography, Type III sleep studies, oximetry, actigraphy, multiple sleep latency test, and multiple wakefulness test. Polysomnography procedures are staffed by registered polysomnography sleep technicians (RPSGTs). Transcutaneous CO2 monitoring and full EEG montage is available with polysomnography (PSG). Apart from PSG services every night (and on certain days for shift work patients), daily home sleep testing is offered – these include airflow-based Type III sleep studies and WatchPAT home sleep apnea testing.

Sleep study referrals need to include the following:

  • Clinical documentation indicating need for objective sleep evaluation using a Type 1 attended PSG or Type 3 home sleep apnea test
  • Approval from insurance provider (self-pay options available)
Sleep medicine patient sleeping during test.

Our Research

The sleep program is involved in a range of research pursuits that include translational, big-data, and industry-driven projects to understand burning questions in a number of sleep conditions that include sleep-disordered breathing, movement disorders and behavioral sleep conditions.

The Sleep Medicine Fellowship

We offer a one year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program designed to produce skilled sleep medicine clinicians, teachers, and investigators through our interdisciplinary approach. Upon graduating, our fellows will have developed the necessary skills to practice clinical sleep medicine and/or pursue a future career in academic medicine.
