About Jose: Jose was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Jose is a proud first-generation graduate of UC Santa Barbara. There, he developed an interest in neuroscience, leading him to research synaptic changes during brain development and how binge-drinking affects cognition in mouse models. He then attended the UC Davis School of Medicine Post-baccalaureate program. The following year, Jose worked as a clinical research coordinator in the UCSF Thoracic Oncology program, where he gained valuable knowledge and interest in lung cancer clinical research. In his free time, Jose likes to watch and play basketball and soccer, run, work on puzzles, and play video games.
Research Advisor: Alan Lombard
Research Interests: My current research interests focus on investigating the genomic characteristics of treatment-resistant prostate cancer cells to understand how these cells leverage adaptive mutability to enhance their survival under prolonged treatment. By studying the specific mechanisms by which these cells acquire resistance to treatment, we can gain insight to potential mechanisms to target for future therapies. In the future, I hope to also involve myself in quality improvement, population health, and clinical research.
Why ARC: I chose ARC-MD because I recognized appreciated the unique mentorship and networking opportunities provided by the faculty directors early-on. The ARC-MD faculty are experts in all forms of research, which aligns best with my goals as a future physician-scientist. I also appreciated the diverse group of students selected by the ARC-MD faculty, as that is an important aspect of my ability to thrive in new environments. Because of this, I chose ARC-MD as I knew I would be well-supported in my journey to becoming a physician-scientist.
