The UC Davis MIND Institute IDDRC Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, and Research Design (BBRD) Core provides comprehensive statistical support to IDDRC investigators for projects at all stages of the research process. With extensive experience on a broad range of intellectual and developmental disabilities related clinical, population, and basic science studies, BBRD faculty and staff form a key resource for MIND Institute and UC Davis researchers studying intellectual and developmental disabilities assisting with study design, protocol and proposal development, data analysis, publication of results as well as guiding development of research-related data management systems. The BBRD Core provides one-stop access to statistical consultation and tailored support for the special needs of individual IDDRC clinical, preclinical, laboratory and population-based studies and cover a full range of services from routine analysis support to innovative methods developed specifically to enhance the research efforts of the IDDRC interdisciplinary team. Basic consulting services are generally provided free of charge to the IDDRC members. Members requiring extensive assistance for long-term projects are expected to provide regular salary support to a designated Core statistician. The core strongly advises early involvement of the Biostatistics support in study planning and grant planning.

The Core provides the following services:

  • Grant proposal preparation
    • Support grant proposal development with study design, sample size and power calculation, and analysis strategy
  • Statistical data analysis and publication
    • Conduct statistical data analyses
    • Summarize and interpret the analysis results
    • Contribute to abstract and manuscript preparation
  • Support IRB applications and DSMB reports
  • Data Collection and Database Design
    • Assist in the design of the data abstraction, including identifying variables to collect and defining variable fields
    • Advise on database structure and data validation system
  • Education and Training
    • Training and mentoring of IDDRC trainees and investigators in the areas of biostatistics and research design
    • Provide regular seminars on statistical topics pertinent to IDDRC research

Biostatistical services of the BBRD Core for research design, study planning, and analysis are offered to IDDRC investigators working on IDDRC-approved projects, subject to availability and adequate advance notice. The BBRD Core provides pre-award biostatistics services without charge to directly support development of grant proposals that, if awarded, will include biostatistics funding for project-specific support. This support includes analysis of pilot data and calculation of sample sizes and power that are prerequisites for the development of grant proposals. For grant proposal development support, please contact us at least 6 weeks before proposal is due so we have adequate time to review the aims, preliminary results and research plan, even in a working draft. Please allow for more time (at least 2 months in advance) if you need analysis of preliminary data.
