UC Davis Health acquires innovative cardiovascular CT scanner

New technology provides enhanced cardiac imaging and reduced radiation exposure to patients

UC Davis Health’s imaging capabilities took a significant step forward with the addition of a new, state-of-the-art cardiovascular CT scanner that provides clinicians with superior resolution and allows a more comfortable and a faster scan for patients.

UC Davis Medical Center is the first hospital in California to use the Canon Aquilion ONE / INSIGHT Edition CT scanner and the first in the United States with a commercial system installed for advanced cardiovascular CT scans.

The new, state-of-the-art scanner is equipped with AI-enhanced image reconstruction technology and workflow optimization for faster scanning and more confident diagnosis.

“This technology is going to be a true game-changer for the way we deliver care to our patients at UC Davis, particularly when it comes to heart and blood vessel imaging,” said Elizabeth Anne Morris, chair of the Department of Radiology. “Not only will it expand our capabilities in both clinical care and research, but because we can better detect, diagnose, and monitor heart disease, it represents hope for better patient outcomes.”

The new cardiovascular CT scanner was introduced to faculty and staff at a ribbon-cutting at the medical center. The scanner produces high-quality, three-dimensional (3D) images of the heart, along with blood vessels and surrounding structures. It can help identify blockages or narrowing of the arteries and detect problems with the pumping function of the heart which may indicate possible heart disease.

The benefits of the new cardiovascular CT scanner include:

  • Enhanced cardiac imaging: The advanced technology can capture high-resolution images of the heart even while it’s beating. Traditionally, this kind of motion may result in a blur and potentially obscure critical image details.
  • Superior vascular visualization: This machine provides highly detailed images of coronary arteries to detect blockages or plaque buildup. It is a non-invasive way to better detect coronary artery disease.
  • Reduced radiation exposure: The AI reconstruction and image processing capabilities help UC Davis Health greatly reduce the radiation dose necessary for each scan — keeping patients safer while still providing clear, diagnostic-quality images.
  • Accelerated scan time: Scans are now quicker, reducing the need for patients to stay still for prolonged periods of time. The speed of these scans may reduce or eliminate the need for sedation in young patients.
  • Non-invasive diagnostic alternative testing: A cardiovascular CT can replace more invasive tests like traditional coronary angiography. The scanner can also offer similar comprehensive results without the need to insert a catheter into the arteries.

“This innovative technology is particularly beneficial for UC Davis Health pediatric patients, as it significantly reduces scan times, minimizing the need for anesthesia during exams and reducing the radiation dose delivered to patients,” said Sarah McKenney, chief of medical physics and faculty member who championed bringing the scanner to the health system. “It is a gamechanger in how we can give a more personalized medical experience to our patients and perform more advanced research.”

The scanner was acquired through the hard work, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence of multiple UC Davis Health teams — including multiple radiology services managers, hospital administration, planning and development, and capital projects — and coordination with innovative industry partners like Canon.

“With the addition of this CT scanner, we are significantly enhancing the speed and efficiency of our imaging services,” said Delane Mason, executive director of Radiology. “This advanced technology allows us to perform faster exams, enabling quicker diagnoses and more timely care for our patients. We are proud to offer this state-of-the-art service as part of our commitment to improving patient outcomes and streamlining care at UC Davis Health.”
