Peter M. Cala's broad research interests include membranes and transport with particular emphasis on the Na/H exchange (NHE1) and its role in cell volume and pH regulation. His current focus is on establishing structural correlates of NHE1 function based upon studies of NHE1 subtype chimeras and EPR spectroscopy. His research also includes NMR studies of the basis for hypoxia-induced cell injury using the rabbit heart as model.
