Become a Volunteer at the Cancer Center

When you become a volunteer, you join a team of volunteers who serve as the ambassadors of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our volunteers are an essential part of our team, helping us provide patients with the best experience possible.

Our volunteer team is made up of caring people, men and women from diverse backgrounds, college students, retirees, transitioning adults and working professionals.

Basic Requirements for Volunteering


Following are the basic requirements for volunteering at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center:

Age: Be at least 18 years old.

Time Commitment: Commit to a weekly shift of 4-6 hours for a minimum of 6 months.

Application and Orientation: Complete the volunteer application process through Volunteer Services and attend the mandatory orientation.

Medical Clearance: Obtain medical clearance as directed by Volunteer Services.

Registration Fee: Pay a one-time registration fee of $10.00 to Volunteer Services.

Background Check: For the safety of our patients, undergo a national criminal background check.

Communication: Demonstrate proficiency in English, both spoken and written, to effectively communicate with patients, visitors, and staff.

Physical Abilities: Possess the physical capacity to:

  • Visually assess patients and read written materials.
  • Remain active for extended periods and move between floors and buildings.
  • Assist in transporting patients and moving supplies, requiring adequate strength and mobility.

Volunteer opportunities

Child Life Program

Volunteers at UC Davis Children’s Hospital assist child life specialists with play activities, supervise children, maintain play areas, clean toys, handle administrative tasks, and support special events.

To volunteer with the pediatric cancer program, specify "child life - Pediatric Infusion Room (PIR)" on your application.
