How to Apply
Electronic Residency Application Service
All applicants must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and register for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
Notice: The deadline for receipt of all application materials is November 1st; applications received after November 1st may not be reviewed.
We are pleased that you are interested in our combined internal medicine/psychiatry residency program and look forward to receiving your application. Given the limited number of combined program positions, we understand that many of our applicants will also apply to categorical internal medicine or psychiatry programs, including at UC Davis. Applying to combined training will not be hindered if you apply to our categorical medicine or psychiatry program through ERAS; we encourage you to do so.

All applications are screened by our Selection Committee utilizing a holistic review, a flexible, individualized way of assessing an applicant’s capabilities by which balanced consideration is given to experiences, attributes, and academic metrics, and when considered in combination, how the applicant might contribute value to our program and as a physician. We consider the entirety of students’ performance and background in determining who we offer interviews to. Thus, we do not have a minimum board score requirement (USMLE and/or COMLEX)—we only require that you have passed each step that you have taken. We review all applications that have passing scores. Dedication to Med/Psych and whole-person care, clinical performance, and extracurricular activities (e.g., research, community engagement, volunteer work, leadership positions, and life experience before medical school) are essential parts of our review.
The interview allows candidates to meet combined and categorical residents and faculty from both departments and to discuss our training sites and combined curriculum. Due to the time required to do a thorough holistic review and the fact that we do not usually extend interview offers until all applications are reviewed, our interview invites do not come out until mid-October.
Applications for PGY-1 positions will be accepted through ERAS. The following items are required:
- ERAS Application / Curriculum Vitae
- Three or four letters of recommendation, including at least one from an internist and one from a psychiatrist who have supervised you clinically. We recommend (but don’t require) that one of those letters is a standardized letter from the Department of Internal Medicine (also known as a “Chair’s Letter”).
- Dean’s Letter/MSPE
- Medical school transcripts
- USMLE scores or COMLEX
- Personal statement
The Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency Program will only sponsor J1 Visas.
Requirements for consideration of international medical graduates applying for postgraduate training in internal medicine also include:
- Completed ERAS Application, including personal statement
- Completion of prescribed course of study in an approved medical school in the past 5 years
- Valid ECFMG certificate (passing both medical and English sections)
- Passage of approved examination(s) (FLEX, USMLE)
- Legal right to remain and work in the United States
- 3 letters of recommendation
- Dean's letter (MSPE)
- Copy of medical school transcripts
- Experience in an American hospital, with clinical exposure. (Pure research in a laboratory of an American hospital is not acceptable)

Effective January 1, 2020 -- All applicants, regardless of whether the medical school attended was/is domestic or international, will be required to meet the following requirements:
- A Postgraduate Training License (PTL) will be required for all residents participating in an ACGME accredited postgraduate training program in California in order to practice medicine as part of their training program.
- A PTL must be obtained within 180 days after enrollment in the program and will not be required to be renewed.
- The profile of a holder of a PTL will be displayed on the Board's website for public view.
Additionally:
- A PTL is valid for 12 months for U.S. or Canadian medical school graduates or 24 months for international medical school graduates only while enrolled in a California ACGME-accredited postgraduate training program. The PTL is not renewable.
- A PTL holder who receives either 12 months (U.S. and Canadian medical school graduates) or 24 months (international medical school graduates) credit of Board-approved postgraduate training with at least four months of general medicine training, may apply for a Physician’s and Surgeon’s License through the transition process.
- The Board may issue a PTL for up to 90 days after a resident has received credit for either 12 or 24 months of Board-approved postgraduate training and continues enrollment in a California ACGME-accredited postgraduate training program. If a Physician’s and Surgeon’s License is not obtained by the PTL expiration date, the physician must cease all clinical services in California.
