Sites and Rotations

The UC Davis Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Residency Training Program offers clinical rotations in various settings. Residents gain experience working with many different communities throughout the Sacramento Valley. All sites are conveniently located within a 15-minute drive from the UC Davis Medical Center.

UC Davis Hospital

UC Davis Medical Center

Our primary academic teaching hospital is a 646-bed facility and serves as a level 1 trauma center and major tertiary care center for the Central Valley and northern California. By 2030, the California Tower completion is expected which will include 334 private rooms, with over 250 designed for flexibility to convert into intensive care units during emergencies. The hospital serves a wide range of uninsured and underinsured populations.

Sacramento County Health Center

Sacramento County Health Center

A federally quailed health center focusing on the urban underserved including Medicaid, uninsured, and undocumented individuals, under Sacramento County’s Healthy Partners plan. Numerous languages are represented here, including Spanish, Russian, Hmong, Mien, Chinese, Vietnamese, Hindi, and Tagalog.

  • IM Continuity Clinic Site
  • Integrated Behavioral Health (BH) Clinic - A fantastic opportunity to work with dually trained faculty. Patients can be seen for their psychiatric illness and primary care from a single provider. This is the primary site for MS4 Combined Psy 421 elective.

This is the home of many UC Davis outpatient clinics for those who are privately insured or have Medicare and Medi-Cal.

  • Subspecialty Clinics (including collaborative care psychiatry)
  • Med-Psych Clinic - An integrated consultative clinic for complicated med-psych patients within our general medicine clinic.

Sacramento County Jail

Sacramento County Main Jail

Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, the Sacramento County Main Jail houses 2,400 inmates and an 18-bed inpatient psychiatric unit for individuals with the highest psychiatric acuity.

VA Northern California Health Care Center

The primary hospital for VA Northern California region, stretching from the East Bay Area to the California-Oregon border.

Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Center

Sacramento County Mental Health Treatment Center

Inpatient psychiatry and mental health intake/stabilization unit for especially vulnerable patients with serious mental illness suffering from acute crises.

 


UC Davis Behavioral Health Center

UC Davis Behavioral Health Center

Primary training site for PGY4 year, including advanced psychopharmacology and psychotherapy practice (primarily CBT and psychodynamic).

UC Davis Advanced Psychiatric Therapeutics Clinic

Our newest addition to clinical site, the UCD APT clinic offers opportunities services such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and esketamine nasal spray treatments.

  1. Intern to resident transition for Psych and IM respectably occurs in summer and winter of PGY2 year
  2. Medicine selectives can be outpatient and inpatient experiences including geriatric medicine, cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, nephrology, infectious disease, palliative care, etc.
  3. The med/psych longitudinal experience is an opportunity to explore your interests at the interface of med/psych. Examples of established clinics include collaborative care in primary care and addiction psychiatry, but residents are also encouraged to pursue their own interests by developing new clinic experiences.
  4. Psychiatry electives include interventional psychiatry (including ECT & TMS), collaborative care, toxicology, addiction, custom electives, etc.
  5. During PGY-5 year, residents may adapt continuity experience based on interests
