Hospitalist Track

Hospital medicine is an expanding field in high demand and has become an increasingly popular career choice for new internists. However, the wide variation in job opportunities can be daunting for trainees as they make their first major career decision out of residency. How do you choose between academic or community practice, and what are key aspects of jobs that you need to look out for? How do you keep up to date with new guidelines and literature out of residency? What are ways to set yourself up for financial and career success as a new attending?

In 2022, our Hospitalist Track was created by two of our graduates with the goal of addressing these questions. The track is based on four pillars: clinical experiences, didactics, formal mentorship, and scholarly work.

In this 1-year track, residents will experience two core rotations which include the screening hospitalist elective and the independent rounding elective (in which residents will be able to simulate what it's like to be an attending hospitalist practicing on their own).

This track also includes longitudinal didactic sessions with Journal Clubs, medical topics tailored to hospital medicine, advice on career searching and succeeding as a new attending, and additional procedural and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training.

All residents in the track are paired with a hospitalist attending as a mentor. These mentors a valuable resource to help residents prepare for applying to and selecting their hospitalist job after residency, completing scholarly work, and surviving the rigors of residency training.

Finally, residents will also complete a scholarly project during their time on the track.

Residents graduating from this track will be confident and ready for a productive career in hospital medicine. We hope to hear from you soon!
