Edward Kim is the new medical director of the UC Davis Cancer Care Network

(SACRAMENTO)

UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center oncologist Edward Kim has been named the new medical director of the UC Davis Cancer Care Network. Kim assumes the role Dec. 1, 2023.

The goal of the Cancer Care Network (CCN) is to improve cancer care in community hospitals so patients can access the latest advancements in treatments without having to leave the convenience of their local hospital. Community oncologists work directly with UC Davis oncologists to ensure the latest diagnostic and treatment options are available to their patients.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the previous medical director, Dr. Richard Bold,” Kim said. “It is truly an exciting time for the UC Davis Cancer Care Network, which has seen remarkable growth and development over the past few years. I look forward to working with the outstanding CCN team to advance the highest level of cancer care to patients served by our network of community cancer centers.”

Kim is currently the medical director of the Office of Clinical Research at UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and has been directly involved in expanding the cancer center’s clinical trials into counties served by the CCN affiliates. This allowed cancer patients living in rural areas to access clinical trials that are typically only available at academic institutions.

“As the current medical director of the Office of Clinical Research, a position he will continue to hold, I see this new role as a perfect fit for Dr. Kim as he further integrates and diversifies our cancer clinical trials in communities that, traditionally, have not had access to advanced cancer care,” UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center Director Primo “Lucky” Lara Jr. said.

As an adult medical oncologist, Kim specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies, including pancreatic, hepatocellular, biliary, esophageal, gastric, and colorectal cancers. His research includes developing and conducting clinical trials for gastrointestinal malignancies. He has a particular interest in translational and clinical research for pancreatic cancer.

Kim received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Harvard University and his medical degree from Stony Brook University. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at University of Michigan.
