Leadership Track

Internal Medicine physicians frequently find themselves in leadership positions—whether leading an 8-person team on the wards or helping to lead a division or physician group after residency—but are rarely provided the necessary foundational tools to succeed in these endeavors. The UC Davis Internal Medicine Leadership Track is a one-year track that provides a unique opportunity for senior residents to learn, contemplate and internalize various leadership skills and perspectives. Taught by experienced leaders in Internal Medicine, this track attempts to provide some of these essential tools.

A group of third year residents.

Small group seminars cover topics such as the art of mentoring, mastering crucial conversations, taking organizations from “good to great” and understanding the joys and challenges of leading in medicine. The track also has quarterly evening book clubs at faculty members’ homes (though moved to Zoom during the COVID Pandemic pending in-person meetings again) where residents present books on leadership to faculty and peers while simultaneously enjoying excellent food.

Due to its popularity, this track is only offered to third year residents. Approximately 12-15 residents sign up for the Leadership Track each year.
