Philosophy of Care

I began my research on children and families affected by bipolar disorder during my combined residency in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. I applied brain imaging, genetic, cognitive, and clinical methods to understand risk factors for developing bipolar disorder, and implemented family focused therapy, mindfulness, and pharmacotherapies to help families thrive. I discovered that while some children of parents with bipolar disorder displayed remarkable resilience, others struggled—often due to delayed diagnosis, leaving them vulnerable to years of unnecessary suffering. For over 20 years, first at the University of Cincinnati and then at Stanford University, I have dedicated my career to unraveling the complexities of this poorly understood condition. Yet, despite decades of research and clinical advances, it feels as though we have only scratched the surface. I am deeply grateful to the patients, families, and research participants who have shaped our understanding of this fascinating disorder. Now, I am honored and humbled to begin the next chapter of my career as the Robert H. Putnam Endowed Chair of Bipolar Research and Treatment at the University of California, Davis, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. With this new role, I look forward to advancing scientific discovery, improving care, and training the next generation of clinicians and researchers dedicated to the research, treatment, and prevention of bipolar disorder. I invite you to join us as we continue working to meet the urgent needs of our patients and families.
