Jann Murray-García, founding faculty member and clinical professor emerita at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Alma Dea Morani, M.D. Renaissance Woman Award.

The national award is the highest honor given by the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation. It recognizes women physicians and scientists whose work has made a lasting mark on medicine and helped shape its future.

Murray-García is a pediatrician who spent more than a decade teaching nursing students in a master’s degree program. As an educator and advocate for health equity, she is best known as co-creator of the concept of cultural humility, a framework recognizing that we never stop learning from the people and communities we serve.

“I am so humbled and grateful to receive the Alma Dea Morani Award from the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation. There are so many, many women physicians who deserve this level of recognition for how they serve and teach and research every day,” Murray-García said.

Beyond her national influence, Murray-García helped cultivate the culture of the School of Nursing itself since its inception in 2009. Through initiatives such as team agreements and inclusive excellence efforts, she fostered an environment where belonging, respect and shared accountability became foundational to how the school community learns, leads and works together.

Building a legacy at UC Davis and beyond

For Murray-García, creating a fairer health system has never been limited to the classroom. Throughout her career at UC Davis, she has brought together students, health care leaders and community members to examine how lived experiences, history and power shape health. It means creating opportunities for people to listen to one another, challenge long-held assumptions and understand how history and social conditions shape health.

“Jann's influence can be felt throughout the School of Nursing,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “She has challenged us to listen more deeply, examine our assumptions and learn from the experiences of others. The culture of belonging and respect she helped foster continues to shape how we educate future health professionals and engage with our communities.”

Murray-García developed the Anti-Racism and Cultural Humility (ARC) Training Program, which helps nursing, medical and UC Davis Health leaders examine bias and address practices that can lead to unequal health outcomes.

Jann Murray-García, front, developed a bus trip along Highway 99 to show students the challenges and strengths of those living in the Central Valley.

She also founded the Interprofessional Central Valley Road Trip, an immersive learning experience along Highway 99. Participants travel by bus into communities often discussed through statistics and policy reports, learning directly from residents about the challenges and strengths that shape life between Stockton and Bakersfield.

Her commitment extends beyond campus. She has been recognized for her volunteer work promoting dialogue about race and social justice in Davis public high schools, including mentoring students who developed a history course on race relations.

Together, these initiatives reflect Murray-García's belief that the work she’s so passionate about belongs not only in classrooms, but in communities, health systems and everyday interactions. That philosophy, first articulated nearly three decades ago, continues to shape education and healthcare globally.

A pioneering idea with worldwide influence

In the late 1990s, Murray-García and fellow physician Melanie Tervalon introduced the concept of cultural humility. Their work challenged the idea that understanding another person's culture is something health professionals can fully master through training alone.

“Dr. Jann is an exceptional scholar who seamlessly thrives at the intersection of vision, science and the importance of honoring, respecting and valuing each other — not as a nice thing to have, but as a fundamental requirement for a functioning and healthy society,” said Piri Ackerman, associate dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence at the School of Nursing.

At its core, Murray-García’s work is about approaching others with curiosity, respect and a willingness to learn. The framework has influenced health professions education and efforts to improve care worldwide.

“There are, of course, generations of women on whose shoulders I stand, especially but not exclusively Black women. Their hope and hard work, often against daunting and disrespectful circumstances, mean we were able to achieve beyond what some of them could imagine,” Murray-García said. “I am committed to continue making dreams become realities for aspiring and current women health professionals.”

Join the virtual celebration

Murray-García will receive the award Nov. 5 at a virtual event hosted in partnership with the New York Academy of Medicine. She will deliver a keynote address, “Cultural Humility: Interrupting Scripts of Inequality.”

The event is free and will be broadcast online beginning at 1 p.m. PT. Register here to attend the celebration.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing has been named one of the top schools in the country for men in nursing.

The American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN) has named the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis one of its 2026 Best Schools for Men in Nursing.

The national award honors schools that recruit men into nursing and help them succeed.

The recognition comes as men's share of the profession has slipped to 10.4%. In addition, men have represented only 11.8% of students in master’s nursing programs across the country in recent years — yet the school’s number of male students has increased.

“This award belongs to our students and faculty, who show every day that nursing is a career for anyone with the skill and heart to do it well,” said Stephen Cavanagh, dean of the school. “Our communities are diverse and the nurses caring for them should be too. When more men see nursing as a real option, patients benefit.”

At the School of Nursing, men made up 19% of admitted students over the past four years, nearly twice the national rate.

Admitting men above national rates

Over the past four years, men accounted for an average of 19% of students admitted to the school, up from 13%. In the Master's Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN), 21.3% of students admitted in 2025 were men. In the school's new Doctor of Nursing Practice — Nurse Anesthesia (DNP-NA) program, three of every four students in the first admitted class are men.

So, what changed? The school looked closely at how it reviewed applications. Faculty built a scoring rubric they believe ensures every applicant is judged the same way, no matter who reads the application file.

Role models in the classroom and the clinic

From left, Bryan Tune, Piri Ackerman and Stephen Cavanagh attend the AAMN conference in Las Vegas.

Men in the school’s programs don’t have to look far to see who has walked their path. A man leads the school as dean, and men hold one in five leadership roles and 14% of faculty and staff positions. Every clinical course in the nurse practitioner program pairs students with male faculty or preceptors. The coursework reflects men’s health, too.

“Seeing someone with a similar background who has successfully navigated the profession can be incredibly empowering,” explained Bryan Tune, an associate professor in the DNP-NA program. “What I hope to communicate to every student is that your place in nursing is not determined by your gender, but by your commitment to learning, your compassion for others and the contributions you are willing to make to the profession.”

In the school’s graduation exit survey the past three years, 71% of male students said they felt valued, included and respected. Alumnus Aron King graduated from the both the master’s-degree leadership and the Ph.D. programs at the School of Nursing.

A total of 71% of graduating male students, when surveyed, said they felt valued, included and respected at the School of Nursing.

“Belonging isn’t simply about being welcomed into a space but being able to see yourself in that space without feeling like you have to prove why you deserve to be there. Nursing needs Black men, Latino men, Asian men and men from all backgrounds,” explained King, who advocates for underserved populations and participates in the Capitol City Black Nurses Association.

At the recent AAMN conference where UC Davis was honored, King received recognition of his own: He was named a Distinguished Fellow for his work to diversity the healthcare workforce and advance men’s health.

“I hope this recognition inspires others to reach back and create opportunities for those coming behind them.”

UC Davis neurosurgeon David Brandman has received the 2026 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award to develop a brain-computer interface that can help restore speech for stroke survivors.

Neurosurgeon David Brandman has been selected to receive the 2026 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award. This National Institutes of Health (NIH) award will support his efforts to develop a brain-computer interface (BCI) to help restore speech for stroke survivors with agrammatic aphasia, a language disorder that affects the ability to speak.

Brandman joins the ranks of exceptional ‘New Innovators’ who do groundbreaking research. He is the third UC Davis Health researcher selected for this award in the last five years.

“We're delighted that Dr. Brandman's innovative research has been recognized with this prestigious funding. He is one of only a handful of neurosurgeons nationwide ever to have received a New Innovator award,” said Kim Barrett, vice dean for research at UC Davis Health.

Restoring speech to patients after stroke

One in four adults will have a stroke in their lifetime. When the blood flow to the brain is blocked or reduced, brain cells get deprived of oxygen. This might impact language areas in the brain and lead to aphasia.

In fact, one-third of stroke survivors will lose speech. Options to help stroke survivors regain naturalistic speech are limited.

“Stroke survivors consistently identify aphasia as the most devastating post-stroke deficit,” said Brandman, the co-director of the UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab. “Our BCI research has the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life for one of the world’s most common neurological conditions.”

Brandman will develop a BCI to restore communication and serve as a rehabilitation device. His study will combine insights from rehabilitation medicine and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.

“BCI can be powerful tool to restore speech to those who want to be heard,” Brandman said.

Brandman and his team will use BCI to record signals from sensors (microelectrode arrays) implanted into participants’ motor-speech and language areas of the brain. Machine learning tools will help decode these signals from the brain neurons.

This research is part of the BrainGate2 clinical trial. Brandman and UC Davis neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky have already shown that a BCI can restore speech to people living with paralysis from ALS.

From Labs to Lives

The award (grant #DP2DC024816-01) is administered by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Cancer center earns renewed ‘comprehensive’ designation

The National Cancer Institute recognizes UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center among the nation’s elite and awards nearly $18 million grant.

The National Cancer Institute has renewed the “comprehensive” designation of UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, recognizing its excellence in research, clinical care, prevention and education.

UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center, a metal and glass building, seen from the outside

The renewal includes a nearly $18 million grant over five years. The funding will help advance groundbreaking research, expand access to clinical trials and strengthen programs that address the region’s cancer burden.

“Renewing our NCI comprehensive designation is a powerful validation of the extraordinary, innovative work happening here every day,” said Primo “Lucky” Lara Jr., director of the cancer center and principal investigator of the grant. “The recognition reflects the dedication of our physicians, researchers, staff and community partners to cancer care and prevention and to addressing cancer disparities in our region.”

The designation places the cancer center among an elite group of only 58 comprehensive cancer centers around the country.

The NCI review process is among the most rigorous in academic medicine. To earn comprehensive status, cancer centers must demonstrate exceptional strength and integration across laboratory, clinical and population-based research programs. They must also show evidence of leadership, community engagement and education efforts.

“UC Davis is driven to break barriers in cancer care through our leading-edge research, compassionate care and community engagement,” said UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May. “Our expertise improves lives and we are honored that the renewed NCI grant furthers the university's mission as an engine of discovery in the fight against cancer.”

UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center offers the region's only phase 1 cancer clinical trials.

Evidence-based cancer treatment and prevention

Outside of San Francisco, UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center from the Bay Area north to Portland and east to Salt Lake City. It is the only designated center in the Sacramento region.

The center cares for more than 100,000 patients each year and conducts more than 200 active clinical trials, including the region’s only phase 1 cancer clinical trials. The center also manufactures CAR-T cells on site, helping to bring leading-edge therapies closer to home.

The designation matters to patients. Research shows that treatment at NCI-designated cancer centers is associated with improved outcomes. One study found a 23% reduction in overall mortality among adults with solid tumors compared with treatment at non-designated centers.

“This is ultimately about the patients and communities we serve,” Lara said. “It ensures we can continue delivering world-class, research-driven care close to home, while accelerating the discoveries that will define the future of cancer treatment.”

The initiative supports leading-edge biomedical and health research aimed at improving patient care and advancing health equity.

The UC Davis grant recipients are:

Joseph Morrison, a medical student in the dual-degree M.D./Ph.D. program who is in the doctoral phase of his studies with the biomedical engineering graduate group

Nikita Mohapatra, also an M.D./Ph.D. program student who is also working towards her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering

Luis Carvajal-Carmona, associate vice chancellor and professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine

The initiative, which is part of the California Health & Human Services Agency, awarded grants in two different categories in recent weeks.

One category is the Representative Research Partnerships Program, which funds precision medicine researchers to work with an academic or community partner. Carvajal-Carmona under this program received $1.7 million to pair up with a Federally Qualified Health Center to support genetic testing in rural areas.

The second category is the initiative’s inaugural Next-Gen Representative Research Program, which provided grants to student researchers, mostly at University of California schools. The $1.8 million fund was split among 12 students — including Morrison and Mohapatra — to cover their expenses as they step away from traditional medical school curriculum and delve into Ph.D. research projects.

In a striking coincidence, Morrison and Mohapatra are not only medical school colleagues in the same M.D./Ph.D. program — they also were classmates at Davis Senior High School.

“It is already remarkably uncommon for two students from the same high school class to go on to M.D./Ph.D. training, much less end up in the same program,” said John A. Gray, director of the UC Davis School of Medicine M.D./Ph.D. program. “To now see both of them recognized with the same competitive statewide research award is pretty special."

Joseph Morrison: Using AI to learn about broken bones

M.D./Ph.D. student Joseph Morrison plans to use machine-learning to review X-rays and doctor’s notes to help determine why some people’s broken bones fuse back together and others don’t.

Morrison’s award will allow him to focus on his doctoral research, which he began last academic year. His work aims to develop clinically meaningful, data-driven approaches that improve diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injury across diverse, particularly rural, healthcare settings.

He was inspired to take on the project after learning that a friend who broke a leg didn’t completely heal and suffered from chronic pain.

Morrison realized that sometimes people’s broken bones fuse back together and other times they don’t, which is called nonunion.

“Some people who have orthopedic surgeries for whatever reason get their bones fixed but they don’t heal back together. I’m trying to see if we can predict when nonunion is going to occur based on data that’s collected during a standard visit.”

To seek answers, Morrison plans to collect X-rays of shin bones and review doctors’ notes and analyze both using machine learning approaches to accurately predict nonunion. If nonunion can be confidently predicted, Morrison said, then an orthopedic surgeon can intervene earlier than usual with revision treatment, such as inserting a rod into the leg.

M.D./Ph.D. student Nikita Mohapatra’s doctoral thesis will explore how cumulative social and environmental stress affect recovery after traumatic brain injury.

Nikita Mohapatra: Helping patients recover from traumatic brain injury

Mohapatra’s doctoral thesis explores how cumulative social and environmental stress can shape recovery after traumatic brain injury.

Her two-year research project will examine biomarkers of acute disease by studying cellular vesicles — tiny particles that cells release into the bloodstream and that can be traced back to the specific tissue that released them.

She wants to learn why patients with the same diagnosis can have very different recovery outcomes by connecting social and environmental factors.

“We often think of recovery when the injury occurs, but it really began way before that,” she said.

Mohapatra wants to examine people being treated for traumatic brain injury and see how lived experiences, such as being exposed to environmental toxins while growing up, prompt measurable biological changes in the body.

“In general, there’s always this underlying push for precision medicine, but I think it’s often thought of in terms of genetics. I want to underline that it’s much broader than that,” she said. “Our biology is more than DNA.”

Luis Carvajal-Carmona: Identifying hereditary conditions earlier in rural settings

Luis Carvajal-Carmona, associate vice chancellor for the Office of Advancing Mentoring and the Professoriate, is teaming up with Ampla Health to screen for hereditary cancer and heart disease in rural, medically underserved populations north of Sacramento.

Carvajal-Carmona, an experienced genetic researcher, received $1.7 million to advance equitable precision medicine in Federally Qualified Health Centers.

Many individuals with hereditary cancer and cardiovascular risk remain undiagnosed in rural, underserved communities. Carvajal-Carmona is teaming up with Ampla Health in rural counties north of Sacramento to offer genomic screening and identify hereditary conditions earlier.

“This study will help pioneer approaches for implementing genomics-based prevention of cancer and heart disease in underserved populations,” Carvajal-Carmona said. “We hope the results will provide a model for statewide population genomics programs that can identify people at inherited risk before disease develops, enabling early interventions that save lives.”

It is believed that nearly 400,000 Californians carry genetic predispositions to cancer or heart disease, Carvajal-Carmona said. However, many do not know they are at increased risk.

“This program has the potential to demonstrate how genomic medicine can be delivered equitably and at scale to improve health outcomes across the state,” he added.

Carvajal-Carmona’s co-principal investigator is Cindy Snelgrove, the chief clinical services officer at Ampla Health. Their team’s project was one of only four grants funded by the initiative, from nearly 100 applications.

Doan, who goes by Thi, was recently honored by a UC Davis Health graduate medical education committee for her commitment to inclusion and community service.

She is the 2026 recipient of the Dr. Ifeanyi Onyeji Resident/Fellow Inclusive Excellence and Equity Award.

The award is named for a urologic surgery resident who died in 2022. The award recognizes a resident or fellow whose efforts demonstrate deep commitments to equity, advocacy, mentorship and service to underserved communities.

Thi said she was “definitely surprised” when she learned of the award.

“Just being able to be recognized for the work I’ve been able to do is really something that I’m grateful for,” she said. “I was really honored just to be nominated.”

Thi was nominated by a residency leader, then singled out in a review process involving representatives from the Resident Medical Staff Committee and the offices of Graduate Medical Education and Medical Pathways.

Faucett, an associate professor of head and neck surgery shared with Thi that her work “distinguished itself through the breadth and impact of your contributions to the community and the institution.”

From Vietnam to Seattle to Sacramento

Thi’s commitment to underserved and immigrant communities is rooted in her own journey.

She was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and immigrated to Seattle with her mother at age 6. She was accepted into the Rainier Scholars program, which recruits talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds and helps steer them toward college.

Thi attended Pomona College for undergraduate studies, then the University of Washington for medical school.

When it came time to apply for residency programs, she made UC Davis internal medicine her top choice, largely because of the opportunity to volunteer in a student-run clinic.

She got involved in the Paul Hom Asian Clinic, the oldest clinic in the U.S. dedicated to serving Asian immigrants, during her second year of residency.

“I’m a first-generation Vietnamese American who wanted to give back to an immigrant patient population that faces many difficulties navigating the health care system,” she said. “It’s really inspiring to see that there are 50 to 60 students on Saturday mornings who run the entire clinic.”

Advocating for underserved patients, inclusion and older adults

During her tenure at UC Davis Health, Thi was co-president of the resident-led committee within the Department of Internal Medicine, which is known as DICE, short for Doctors for Inclusion and Community Engagement.

She also served in the Transforming Education and Community Health (TEACH) program, which trains residents to care for medically underserved patients.

When she’s not working or volunteering, Nhu Y “Thi” Doan likes to create personalized greeting cards.

Despite a demanding schedule, Thi also made time for creative pursuits. She took part in an art activity she’s kept up since elementary school — making personalized greeting cards out of construction paper.

Upon completing her residency last month, Thi moved to Southern California for a yearlong fellowship in geriatrics at UCLA.

“I’ve always had a soft spot for the older adults in my life,” she said. “Geriatrics takes internal medicine to another level where the mission is doing everything we can to support patients and their families while minimizing risk.”

“Navigating the medical system in outpatient or inpatient settings can be very difficult for the communities I want to serve,” Thi said. “I strive to practice medicine in a way that centers on the patient.”

Emergency medicine physician awarded prestigious Fulbright Scholarship

Emergency medicine physician Christine McBeth has received a Fulbright award to improve trauma care in The Gambia through training, research and emergency care system development.

Christine McBeth, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC Davis Health, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award.

A healthcare educator demonstrates medical equipment to a clinician in a hospital ward during a hands-on training session.

The award will allow McBeth to spend six months on research to improve trauma care in a country she's very familiar with — The Gambia — where she has trained healthcare workers for years.

Her Fullbright work will support the country's National Trauma Injury Prevention and Management Plan for 2025–2029. The plan was created after a deadly stadium collapse prompted the need for stronger emergency care systems.

Unlike the United States, emergency medicine is not yet recognized as an independent medical specialty in The Gambia and many other low- and middle-income countries. As a result, emergency care is often delivered by physicians from multiple disciplines without standardized emergency medicine training, creating gaps in trauma care, triage and the management of critically ill patients.

During her six-month Fulbright-sponsored appointment, McBeth will partner with clinicians and health system leaders in The Gambia to develop a longitudinal emergency and trauma care curriculum for medical residents and medical officers. Her research will evaluate best practices for implementing emergency and trauma care systems, including improvements in clinical workflow, patient outcomes, provider knowledge and attitudes and strategies to optimize the transfer of injured patients across the country's healthcare system.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award,” McBeth said. “The Fulbright is a meaningful recognition of the work we’ve been doing in The Gambia and the difference it is making. This opportunity will allow us to spend six months focused on improving trauma care, helping us build on our progress and reach more people. I’m grateful for the support and recognition this award provides.”

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest science-backed guidelines.

As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, UC Davis Health qualified for the awards by demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving the quality of cardiovascular and stroke care. These awards were based on data from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec.31, 2025.

UC Davis Medical Center received the following achievement awards:

Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold with Target: Type 2 Diabetes

Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI, or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, is a heart attack that happens when the heart doesn’t get enough oxygen.

This award is earned by hospitals that provide rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

UC Davis Health also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award. It is earned when a hospital ensures patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart attack.

Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes

Coronary Artery Disease STEMI, or ST elevation myocardial infarction, is a serious heart attack caused by a completely blocked artery. It’s the most dangerous kind.

The award is earned by hospitals that excel in treating people according to the most current, science-based guidelines for STEMI care, as outlined by the American Heart Association.

UC Davis Health also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award. It is given to hospitals that ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart attack.

Heart Failure Gold Plus with Target: Heart Failure Optimal and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

Heart failure is a long-term condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood and oxygen to the body. There’s no cure, but people can still live well by following a care plan with their doctor. This may include medicine, monitoring symptoms and making healthy changes.

Hospitals receiving this award provide exceptional care according to the most current, evidence-based guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association.

UC Davis Health also received the Target: Heart Failure Optimal, for medication adherence, early follow-up care and coordination and enhanced patient education. The Optimal designation means the hospital has performed 50% or better for defect-free care.

The Medical Center additionally received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll award. It is earned when a hospital helps provide patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart disease or stroke.

Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus, Advanced Therapy and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll

A blocked or burst blood vessel in the brain causes a stroke. Quick treatment for a stroke can save lives, reduce disability and improve chances of a faster recovery.

To qualify for this recognition, hospitals are aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. In addition to following clinical treatment recommendations, Get With The Guidelines participants also provide education to help people manage their recovery and ongoing health at home.

UC Davis Health also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Stroke Elite Plus award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals meet specific criteria that reduce the time between an eligible patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with clot-busting IV medication.

Advancing health equity in emergency care

Jarman’s research explores how biological sex and gender influence diagnosis and care in emergency medicine, with a particular focus on venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism (PE). Her work examines why women are often over tested compared to men — and yet are diagnosed with PE less often than men. Her research looks at both clinical factors and potential cognitive biases that may lead physicians to overestimate the risk of PE in female patients, yet underdiagnose and undertreat women with the condition.

“By identifying the factors driving why women are often tested more compared to men, we can bring greater precision to diagnostic decision-making and help reduce health disparities,” Jarman said. “Shining a light on this issue allows us to advance health equity by using data-driven insights to minimize unnecessary testing and improve care for women and other underrepresented populations.”

About the Young Investigator Award

SAEM, a not-for-profit organization, aims to improve the care of acutely ill and injured patients through research and education.

The Society’s core mission includes supporting research that generates new insights, and the Young Investigator Award recognizes those who have achieved early success in this sphere.

“I am honored to receive this national recognition for my work to advance health equity,” Jarman said, who credits her success to the support of the BIRCWH program (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health) and the Department of Emergency Medicine.

“Their investment in me over the past several years has been essential to building my research program and underscores the critical role of career development funding in helping early-career faculty grow and succeed in academic medicine,” Jarman said.

Neuroscientist and neural engineer Sergey Stavisky will join the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences.

Sergey Stavisky, an assistant professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery, will join 20 other early-career scientists from around the country in the prestigious Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences. Each will receive four years of funding to explore leading-edge research uncovering insights into human health and disease.

“I’m honored to have received the Pew Biomedical Scholar Award,” Stavisky said. “This recognizes the potential of my group’s new line of research investigating how the human brain produces language.”

Restoring communication

Stavisky is a neuroscientist and neural engineer. His work involves studying how the brain encodes speech and language, with the goal of designing devices that restore communication. He is the co-director of the UC Davis Neuroprosthetics Lab, alongside neurosurgeon David Brandman. The lab’s most recent research focuses on the use of brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, to restore speech to people who have lost the ability to speak due to neurological disease or injury.

BCIs give scientists a direct window into how the brain works. By studying brain activity, researchers like Stavisky can better understand how the brain processes thoughts and language. This is essential to developing new solutions, devices and therapies for conditions like language disorders.

“Language is a unique human ability that is especially understudied at the resolution of individual neurons, but I hope that what we learn will provide a roadmap for building language neuroprostheses to help people with language loss due to stroke,” Stavisky explained.

Stavisky earned his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Brown University and his Ph.D. in neurosciences from Stanford University. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Stanford Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory.

"Sergey Stavisky’s work reflects the very best of what we hope to do in academic neurosurgery — pursue rigorous science that can meaningfully improve patients’ lives,” said Kia Shahlaie, chair of the UC Davis Department of Neurological Surgery. “His research is helping us better understand how the human brain produces speech and language, while also moving us closer to new technologies that may one day restore communication for patients who have lost it. We are incredibly proud to see his innovation and leadership recognized by the Pew Scholars Program."

Effective July 1, Lakshminrusimha will serve on the Committee on Child Health Financing, which advises the AAP board of directors on various aspects and sources for private and public financing of children’s healthcare services. The committee’s role includes monitoring and making policy recommendations regarding managed care, emerging health insurance options and scope of benefits.

The committee collaborates with other AAP panels, councils and sections to inform the organization on federal and state financing activities. The AAP assists chapters in their efforts to influence the monies involved in state determination of Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and other government healthcare financing programs.

Lakshminrusimha, a neonatologist, was the co-chair of UC Davis Health’s Clinical Funds Flow Committee for the past five years and chair of the UC Davis Medical Group finance committee this past year. These experiences, he said, have reinforced the importance of crucial strategic financial alignment to AAP’s clinical mission.

“I am truly honored to join the AAP Committee on Child Health Financing to advocate for sustainable pediatric care models on a national scale,” Lakshminrusimha said. “I look forward to translating our local insights into national policies that sustain the pediatric subspecialist workforce, and protect and expand access to high-quality care for all children.”

Lakshminrusimha’s appointment is for six years, contingent on AAP board reappointment every two years.

The annual Money rankings identify hospitals that deliver outstanding clinical outcomes, patient experience and value. For 2026, Money evaluated thousands of hospitals nationwide and named only 75 hospitals in each specialty category to its final lists.

UC Davis Medical Center was ranked #33 as a Best Hospital for Pediatric Care and #44 on the list for Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

“This national recognition reflects the dedication, expertise and compassion of our physicians, nurses and care teams who serve children and families throughout Northern California and beyond,” said Satyan Lakshminrusmha, chief of pediatrics and pediatrician-in-chief at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. “From prenatal care and childbirth to highly specialized pediatric services, our teams are committed to providing the safest, most comprehensive care at every stage of life.”

Methodology behind the rankings

Money’s Best Hospitals for Maternity Care list spotlights facilities that excel in caring for patients before, during and after pregnancy while maintaining strong safety records and patient satisfaction. Hospitals are evaluated using federal quality data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, measures of maternity-specific expertise, neonatal intensive care capability and nationally recognized accreditations.

The prestigious award honors a scientist whose significant, fundamental contributions to autism research have had a lasting impact on the field.

Amaral’s research investigates the relationship between autism and differences in early brain development. He combines brain imaging and clinical data from long-term studies to identify distinct subtypes of autism. He also produces animal models and facilitates research using postmortem brain donations.

“It’s incredibly humbling to receive this award,” Amaral said. “We’ve made significant strides in our understanding of autism, and yet there is still much to learn. I’m honored to have played a role in advancing this critical field of research.”

The award was presented this week at the INSAR 2026 conference in Prague. The moment was made even more special because it was delivered by one of Amaral’s former trainees — Christine Wu Nordahl, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the MIND Institute. Nordahl is the scientific program chair for the conference, which is attended by autism researchers from more than 75 countries.

Presenting the award was very meaningful, Nordahl said, given their many years of working together, first when she was a trainee and later as fellow faculty members.

“It’s very fitting to be presenting this award to David during this historic 25th anniversary of INSAR. Way back in 2001, he recognized the need for a dedicated conference focused on autism science to bring together scientists and clinicians from different disciplines. He then played a foundational role in starting the very first INSAR meeting in 2001,” Nordahl said.

A focus on long-term research across fields

Amaral has long been a leader in large-scale interdisciplinary research efforts.

In 1998, he was the founding research director of the MIND Institute, at the time a brand-new center at UC Davis Health created by local families with autistic children. Both then and now, a key strength is the institute’s ability to bring researchers from a wide range of fields together toward common goals.

In 2006, Amaral founded the Autism Phenome Project, one of the most comprehensive long-term studies of autism in the world. The ongoing study seeks to identify subtypes of autism with the goal of being able to predict outcomes and tailor support for children in the future.

Amaral is also the director of Autism BrainNet, a postmortem brain repository program aimed at enhancing autism research.

A faculty member at UC Davis and its Center for Neuroscience for over 30 years, Amaral has published more than 360 research papers and been cited more than 96,000 times. He has co-edited four books and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2019.

In addition, Amaral has played a key role in INSAR’s history. In addition to organizing the first research conference 25 years ago, he is a past president of the organization and was editor of its journal, Autism Research, for 11 years.

Amaral spent the early part of his career at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, then joined UC Davis in 1995. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology at Northwestern University and a joint Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Psychology from the University of Rochester He also conducted postdoctoral research in anatomy and neurobiology at Washington University.

Previous INSAR Lifetime Achievement Award winners from the MIND Institute include Sally Rogers, distinguished professor emeritus and Peter Mundy, distinguished professor, both in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Building a more sustainable health care model

UC Davis Health has received national awards for its leadership in sustainability and community investment.

UC Davis Health has earned national recognition for its leadership in sustainability and community well-being. This extends beyond environmental initiatives and supports a broader commitment to community health through its Anchor Institution Mission. The mission’s goal is to boost economically distressed communities in the region through local hiring, purchasing and investing.

four adults stand outside holding shovels and rakes in a garden on the UC Davis Health campus

This includes innovations in energy efficiency, waste reduction, transportation, purchasing, design and construction and clinical care.

Efforts to reduce single-use plastics included this recent distribution of reusable utensil kits for UC Davis Health employees.

Kristina Bair directs the UC Davis Health Sustainability Committee. The group works to create a resilient and sustainable health care model that celebrates the intersection between human and planetary health through community engagement and education.

“Sustainability is fundamentally about protecting and improving health,” Bair explained. “From energy and building design to food recovery and waste reduction, we’re finding innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint while creating a more resilient health care system for our community.”

Together, these initiatives, which align with the Anchor Institution Mission, are earning UC Davis Health national praise.

National awards highlight leadership

UC Davis Health recently received several significant awards for its sustainability progress:

SMUD’s First Clean Power City Business Champion Award

SMUD honored UC Davis Health with this award in recognition of the partnership between the two entities in the energy efficient design and planning of 48X and the Folsom Medical Care Clinic. The design innovations at these two facilities resulted in almost $200,000 in incentives, which created seed money for future sustainability improvement efforts.

Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus designation

The Arbor Day Foundation named UC Davis Health a 2025 Tree Campus for its commitment to using trees and green spaces to support human health, environmental sustainability and broader community well-being. This work includes expanding the campus tree canopy, planting drought-tolerant vegetation, eliminating synthetic herbicides and hosting community tree-planting events.

Practice Green Health Emerald Award

UC Davis Health earned this award in 2025 from Practice Green Health, which recognizes outstanding hospitals with advanced sustainability programs. UC Davis Health also received 2025 Circles of Excellence recognition in five categories: food, sustainable procurement, water, transportation and green building.

Bair emphasized the importance that collaboration played in these successes. “The progress we’re seeing is the result of collaboration across our organization,” she said.

Sustainability in action

The reusable utensil kits debuted in 2025 at the Scrubs East Café.

Examples of this collaborative sustainability work include:

Expanding the tree canopy

In 2025, the UC Davis Health’s Grounds Department planted more than 500 trees across the campus. This enhances air quality, provides more shade in public areas, reduces heat and creates healthier outdoor environments in the surrounding area.

Diverting food to families in need

UC Davis Health’s Food and Nutrition Services donates excess prepared food through our partnership with COPIA, a resource that connects surplus food to those who need it most. In fiscal year 2024-2025, UC Davis Health donated 16,898 pounds of food. This combats food insecurity within our community and reduces the amount of organic waste sent to landfills — a major source of methane emissions.

Reducing single-use plastics

The Sustainability Committee is also working to cut back on single-use plastics. These efforts include the design and distribution of a reusable utensil kit for UC Davis Health employees. The Reusable Flatware Initiative debuted at Scrubs East Café in 2025 and resulted in the distribution of more than 4,000 kits. As a result, nearly 9,000 fewer disposable utensils were purchased when compared to the previous year. The project will continue in 2026 with distribution at Lawrence Ellison Café in the Ambulatory Care Center.

The reusable utensil kits are a big hit with employees. Thanks to their adoption, nearly 9,000 fewer disposable utensils were purchased in 2025.

One of the Sustainability Committee’s long-term goals is a fossil fuel-free future. The plan is to electrify the health system’s central plant by 2045 and purchase clean energy through SMUD. This would make UC Davis Health a zero net emissions operating campus, which would achieve a 90% emissions reduction, while improving air quality for the UC Davis Health campus and surrounding Sacramento community.

The Sustainability Committee will also host Earth Day events in April for staff and students, including events focused on green commuting and a sustainability walking tour.

Want to see UC Davis Health sustainability in action? Take the Virtual Walking Tour!

Aron King, School of Nursing master's-degree leadership alumnus and PhD candidate, is awarded the UC Davis Young Alumni Award from the California Aggie Alumni Association.

This year, the award celebrates someone intimately connected to the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Aron King, a 2021 Master of Science in Leadership graduate and fourth-year PhD student in Nursing Science and Health Care Leadership, has been named a Young Alumni Award recipient.

King’s resume spans clinical leadership, community-building and scholarship, including the role of assistant nurse manager at UC Davis Health. Earlier this year, he stepped into a new leadership position as the Magnet Program director at Kaiser Permanente Antioch.

Along the way, he has become a visible advocate for health care representation and mental health. He has been a driving force within the Capitol City Black Nurses Association (CCBNA), an organization he helped grow from a small chapter into a nationally recognized community hub.

“Aron is an exceptional nurse, doctoral student, community member and role model for the profession of nursing,” said Associate Dean Piri Ackerman, who has worked closely with King in his academic and community pursuits. “He has an extraordinary ability to bring people together.
Piri Ackerman, left, nominated Aron King because of his “extraordinary ability to bring people together.”

A leader who ‘calls people in’

King’s leadership is deeply aligned with the School of Nursing’s mission — especially its emphasis on optimal health for everyone, community connection and innovation.

“Aron exemplifies the core values of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing through the relationships he builds in the community, his commitment to health for all people, including underserved populations, and the way he collaborates with people who are too often overlooked by traditional systems,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “His work engaging Black men in wellness conversations reflects deep listening, empathy and collaboration with those directly impacted.”

That work comes to life through programs such as Barbershop Health Talks — a community education effort he helped create. These are spaces designed to meet people where they are and build trust through conversation, peer support and practical health education. King has seen how quickly the right setting can unlock engagement. It led to the focus of his dissertation, “Cut to the Chase.”

“Once you start sharing health statistics, the guys are like, ‘We need to get more information like this out there.’ It’s just a huge disconnect,” he explained.

What began as virtual programming for Black men during the COVID pandemic grew into sustained community momentum in barbershops, including turnout that surprised even him.

“I didn’t know if we were going to get people to come for group therapy at 6 p.m. on a Thursday night,” he recalled. “We had like 30 people show up, and I was like, ‘Whoa.’”

Among the fewer than 1% of Black male nurses in the nation, King shared his experiences on the national documentary, “Everybody’s Work: Healing what hurts us all.” He illustrated how he has taken a collaborative impact approach to diversifying the nursing workforce by demonstrating what can be done beyond the bedside.

Aron King’s works to advance mental and social wellbeing for Black men in Sacramento evolved from talks in barbershops to his dissertation focus.

‘I do it for the cause, not the applause’

King is quick to connect recognition to responsibility.

“All the awards that I’ve received, I hadn’t applied for. People nominated me,” he said. “It’s recognition of your impact and how you’re making a difference. But I do it for the cause, not the applause.”

That mindset, paired with mentorship and opportunity at UC Davis, helped transform early uncertainty of his professional motivations and personal “why,” into clarity of purpose.

“Health care doesn’t just happen in the hospital,” he said. “Health care is everywhere. I want to be the resource that I wish I had.”

As he prepares to graduate this June from the nursing school’s doctoral program, King is already thinking beyond the dissertation. His long-term vision is bold and, not surprisingly, centered on community.

“Instead of looking at how we could get health into the barbershop,” he said, “why don’t we bring the barbershop into the clinic?”

The award isn’t a finish line for King. It’s a signal that the work matters and that the next chapter should be even bigger. Something the alumni association surely recognizes.

Award winners will be celebrated at a gala on May 7 at the Walter Buehler Alumni Center.

                              (SACRAMENTO)

When Associate Professor Charleen Singh learned she had been selected as a Fulbright Scholar, the news did not land all at once.

“It still hasn’t settled in,” she said. “It’s too big.”

Singh is the director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice — Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) Program at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Her selection marks the first time a faculty member from the school has earned a Fulbright — one of the most competitive international exchange awards in the world.

The selection carries a deeply personal weight. It is not only recognition of her work, Singh said, but confirmation that the work had mattered.

For years, Singh questioned whether she was even worthy of applying to the prestigious program. Those doubts followed her despite nearly two decades in academia, years of clinical practice and a career shaped by developing an expertise in pediatrics, maternal and infant health.

For Charleen Singh, being named a Fulbright scholar confirms her career decisions put her on the right track to expand her international impact and bring new perspectives back to her students.

She had spent much of her nursing career at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, helping develop best practices in pediatric wound and ostomy care. Her doctoral research focused on pediatric nursing interventions and pressure injuries. Her clinical experience stretches from Canada down the West Coast, across hospitals and clinics in Seattle, the Bay Area and Southern California.

Still, it took time before she felt ready to apply.

“These were things I wanted to do anyway,” she said. “Teaching. Research. Engaging with people.”

When a panel of reviewers she had never met said yes, the meaning was immediate.

“It was the first time I thought, ‘Everything I’ve done really did matter.’”

What a Fulbright represents

The Fulbright Program is one of the most selective international exchange programs in the world. Each year, a limited number of scholars are chosen for specific countries and disciplines, based on where academic and cultural exchange is expected to have the greatest impact.

Fulbright Scholars are selected not only for their credentials, but for trust. The program chooses people who can work independently, translate ideas across cultures and engage meaningfully with host communities, then bringing that knowledge back home.

“This Fulbright represents more than an individual honor. It signals the growing international reach of our school and the strength of faculty like Dr. Singh, whose work advances nursing education and health scholarship across borders,” said Dean Stephen Cavanagh. “We are proud of her leadership and the example she sets for global engagement.”

For Singh, the selection reflected the full arc of her work: teaching across nursing programs, remaining active in clinical practice until recently, publishing with international collaborators and presenting globally on pediatric wound care.

“Someone looked at the whole picture,” she said. “And said it all counted.”

That recognition still feels unreal.

“I didn’t expect to be selected,” she said. “Even now, I’m still processing it.”

Five months of immersion in Indonesia

Singh’s Fulbright will take her to Indonesia for approximately five months. From her base at the University of Indonesia, she will teach across undergraduate, graduate and PhD nursing programs, working closely with faculty in pediatrics, maternal health and family care.

Unlike her previous short-term international visits, this experience is designed for immersion.

“This isn’t two weeks and then leaving,” she said. “It’s being part of one community for months.”

Although Singh will complete intensive language training, she will teach in English, with course materials translated into Indonesian. As the only nursing Fulbright Scholar in Indonesia this cycle, she will also be able to engage in clinical outreach, develop educational or health programs and participate in international conferences. Time at the end of her stay is reserved for scholarship and writing.

Fulbright Scholars like Charleen Singh, seen here in Jakarta, are chosen for specific countries and disciplines, based on the location’s academic and cultural needs.

Throughout the experience, Singh will continue serving as director of the Sacramento-based DNP-FNP program, leading preceptorship efforts and clinical operations remotely. She hopes to bring back new partnerships, create new opportunities for faculty and students and forge deeper global connections.

What she already carries with her is something quieter.

“For a long time, I wasn’t sure if I was good enough,” she said. “And especially now with the profession of nursing facing challenges across the country, being accepted for the Fulbright reaffirms the value of nursing.”

The award cognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s Healthy Work Environment Standards. The AACN recognized a record 580 units from more than 300 hospitals that sought the Beacon Award for Excellence in 2025.

Award-winning units meet AACN criteria that recognize supportive work environments where nurses can drive clinical excellence.

Silver-level recipients also demonstrate ongoing staff development and quality improvement to achieve optimal patient care.

AACN President Rebekah Marsh praised unit teams that achieved the Beacon Award for Excellence for their dedication to providing safe, patient-centered and evidence-based care to patients and families.

“Congratulations to our AACN Beacon teams for showing what nurses can do when we practice in a healthy work environment,” she said. “This meaningful recognition is more than a point of pride; it demonstrates a commitment to cultivating a thriving workplace, one in which nurses and other team members are empowered to make their optimal contributions.”

About the Beacon Award for Excellence

Established in 2003, AACN’s award recognizes top hospital units that meet standards of excellence in recruitment and retention; education, training and mentoring; research and evidence-based practice; patient outcomes; leadership and organizational ethics; and creation of healthy work environments. Award criteria, which measure systems, outcomes and environments against evidence-based national criteria for excellence, provide a mechanism to enhance patient safety efforts.

About the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses

Augustine Saiz with his Gold Medal for outstanding research.

Long before traveling to the Swiss Alps, the foundation for this victory was built in the lab. A recipient of the prestigious K08 award from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, Saiz is dedicated to solving the biological puzzles of fracture repair.

His lab is currently leading critical studies on how polytrauma — severe injuries to multiple body parts — creates systemic effects that alter fracture repair. They are also investigating the localized impact of muscle injury on bone regeneration.

The winning research

Saiz secured the top honor for his presentation titled: "Hydrogel Co-Delivery of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Disordered Peptides Attenuates the Early Local Inflammatory Response and Improves Fracture Healing in Polytrauma."

The research team explored whether a new type of gel could help the body heal broken bones after severe injuries. The gel contains hyaluronic acid, a natural material already used in some medical treatments, along with mesenchymal stem cells and a lab‑designed protein called P2.

P2 was engineered to act like osteocalcin, a protein the body uses to build and maintain healthy bone. In a murine model of multiple traumas, the combination of P2 and stem cells helped reduce the intense inflammation that often follows major injuries and slows bone healing.

The study found that P2 sends steady, bone‑building signals at the fracture site, while the stem cells help calm inflammation. Used together, they sped up bone repair, produced more consistent healing and supported the growth of stronger, healthier bone. This work was recently published in The Journal of Tissue Engineering.

Building a global network

The AO Trauma Research Olympiad is a premier global event designed to connect the next generation of thought leaders. Saiz was one of only 10 early-career surgeons selected worldwide to present their work to a panel of distinguished experts.

Beyond the podium, the event served as a forum for building an international network. As a finalist, he gained exclusive access to the AO Research Institute and the AO Innovation Technology Center. He spent time connecting with fellow researchers, discussing future fellowship opportunities, and attending the renowned AO Davos Courses alongside more than 300 faculty members and 1,000 participants.
