Interventional Pulmonology Program

Interventional pulmonology (IP) focuses on the use of minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat airway disorders, thoracic malignancies and pleural diseases.

UC Davis Health’s Interventional Pulmonology Program, within the nationally ranked Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, has established distinction and dedication in state-of-the-art care using minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to treat the full spectrum of lung diseases.

The IP multidisciplinary care team consists of physicians, registered nurses and respiratory care practitioners, with highly specialized training in interventional pulmonology. Our IP program is integrated with the nationally recognized and prestigious UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our team coordinates the efforts of multiple specialists to provide a comprehensive and patient-centered approach to delivering efficient clinical care. Our services are offered at UC Davis Health through several specialized programs:

  • Complex Airway Program
  • Pleural Disease Program
  • Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program
  • COPD and Asthma Program
  • Pulmonary Nodule and Lung Cancer Screening Program
  • Pulmonary Research and Clinical Trials

We are actively involved in clinical trials evaluating new therapies and tools for improving patient care and the treatment of lung diseases. Discover Current Clinical Trials

Lung Cancer Breakthroughs

Technology Helping Spot and Track Lung Cancer Earlier

UC Davis Health is first in the region to deploy two new technologies that bring hope to people with lung cancer. Both provide advanced imaging. One helps catch lung cancer earlier and the other tracks the progress of lung cancer treatment. They decided to pair the Cios Spin, made by Siemens Healthineers, with a breakthrough robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system called the Ion, made by Intuitive. Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy allows doctors to precisely examine air passages with a controller that operates a small camera at the end of a flexible tube. The Cios Spin aids this advanced tool by using cone beam computed tomography to create real-time 3D images. The images automatically update the best path to lung nodules or lesions.
