Course Overview

This 4- week clerkship will give each 4th-year medical student an opportunity to learn about various subspecialties within radiology, tailored toward the interest of each student.  Medical students attend daily conferences that are tailored toward medical imaging for medical students. Students will also attend subspecialty conferences provided by each respective section within the department of radiology.

Grades are determined by attendance, evaluations, and presentations.  Attendance is composed of presence and participation within the rotation and lectures.  Students are excused up to 3 days for residency interviews. Students missing more than 3 days while on the rotation may receive additional assignments or need to make up missed day(s).   Evaluations are based upon professionalism, communication, and clinical skills.  Each medical student will be responsible for preparing a total of 2 case presentations. These presentations will occur during an allotted time noted on the teaching conference schedule.

Course Overview

This 2-week clerkship held in tandem with the family medicine clerkship in the 3rd year of medical school enables students to gain a stronger grasp of diagnostic imaging.  Our goal is that upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • understand appropriate utilization of imaging for common clinical presentations
  • be able to describe the imaging findings of common thoracic disorders, abdominal pathology, musculoskeletal conditions, and critical findings
  • be able to think critically about how radiologic imaging could improve in areas such as population health or integration with technologic advances

Students will be assigned regular reading with corresponding flip-teaching sessions based upon the reading material.  Students will also give presentations during the course and take a final exam based upon the reading material and educational sessions.  Student grades will be determined based upon professionalism, presentations, evaluations, and the exam.

  • Aim for the videos to be under 3 minutes
  • Make sure the case is not so unique as it would identify the patient (conjoined twins or something so rare as there may only be a few cases in the country)
  • Minimal clinical information (rather than “this is a 53 year-old female,” an alternative would be “a middle-aged patient,” assuming the age is relevant)
  • Make sure no patient identifiers are on the video (no name, medical record number, date of birth, date of examination)
  • Record video in landscape mode
  • The raw video/audio is all that is needed. The video will be post-processed
