Philosophy of Care

I believe that my role as a physician is to provide my patients with as much clear information as possible so that they can make the best decision based on their individual goals, priorities and beliefs. As a former high school teacher, I see it as part of my duty to explain different treatment options in a way that is clear and understandable. I pride myself on my ability to explain complex disease processes and the treatment options available in a clear and easy to understand manner. I respect my patients' wishes, and I understand that everyone has different needs and priorities. I will always do everything I can to ensure that my patient is getting the best possible care that is tailored to their specific needs and wishes. My job is to provide my patients with the most up to date information, and help them make decisions that are right for them regarding their care.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Maximus focuses on the clinical evaluation and treatment of aortic aneurysms, dissections, trauma and aortic pathology that involves any segment of the aorta, which includes the aortoiliac, juxtarenal, pararenal, complex abdominal thoracoabdominal and aortic arch. Dr. Maximus completed his vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Chicago, where he learned to provide multidisciplinary care of patients with complex vascular disorders. In addition to completing a vascular surgery fellowship, he has sought out additional training and completed an Advanced Endovascular Aortic Fellowship at the University of Texas, Houston under the mentorship of Dr. Gustavo Oderich, who is the world renowned authority on innovative minimally invasive endovascular techniques to treat complex aortic aneurysms.

Dr. Maximus serves as the director of aortic surgery at UC Davis, and performs both endovascular and open aortic procedures, such as endovascular aortic arch repair and repair of complex thoracoabdominal aneurysms with physician modified endovascular grafts (PMEGs). He is also an expert on a number of other types of vascular diseases, including carotid pathology. He has performed the most Transcarotid Arterial Revascularizations (TCARs) in the region, and is an expert who proctors other physicians for this operation. Dr. Maximus' practice philisophy is compassion, excellence and availability.

Research/Academic Interests

Dr. Maximus' research interests include data regarding endovascular treatment for aortic aneurysm repair, both initial repair and the salvage of failing endografts. He is the principal investigator for several clinical trials and he has extensive experience with new and innovative devices that many surgeons do not have access to. Dr. Maximus was the first physician in the entire University of California system to successfully deploy the Gore Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis, and was also the first physician to use this device for an ascending aortic aneurysm repair. He has several publications and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery.
